Unattractive Qualities

Greed

It’s Boxing Day - a good day to talk about a very unattractive quality: greed.

Being greedy does nothing nice for anyone. It brings out the worst in us and it turns other people off from wanting to spend time with us.

The problem is that it is very easy to be greedy. As humans we tend to be self-centric, meaning that we like to think about ourselves before we think about other people.

We want what we want when we want it. And we don’t want anyone else to get in our way.

I know I can be very greedy without even thinking about it. It catches me off guard about silly things sometimes like not wanting to share a treat because I want it all for me. Or wanting to go spend money just on myself because I want new things.

We can even be greedy with our time - where we want all the time for ourselves to do what we want without thinking about what someone else wants.

In North America we live in a culture where we are constantly trying to “keep up with the Joneses.” This culture makes us feel like we are behind and need to go buy more and better stuff so that we can have more than the next person. It’s a different form of greed where we are never satisfied with what we have but always want to have the best.

Greed can so easily creep into our lives and it’s one of those qualities that is important to fight and keep at bay. Most of us don’t want to be greedy - and I believe that the antidote to greed is generosity.

So if you are struggling with greed, find a way to be generous to someone else!

Interesting Fact #1

Overly self-centered behaviour becomes the first give-away of greedy people. Greedy people are always saying “me, me, me” with very little regard for the needs and feelings of others.

SOURCE

Interesting Fact #2

Envy and greed are like twins. While greed is a strong desire for more and more possessions (such as wealth and power), envy goes one step further and includes a strong desire by greedy people for the possessions of others.

Interesting Fact #3

Greedy people lack empathy. Caring—being concerned about the feelings of others—is not part of their repertoire. As such, they have little qualms about causing pain to others. Their inability to empathise, their lack of genuine interest in the ideas and feelings of others, and their unwillingness to take personal responsibility for their behaviour and actions makes them very difficult people to be with.

Article of the day - Is Greed Good or Bad?

For the most part, greed is considered by most religions and schools of thought to be a bad thing. In fact, greed is one of the seven deadly sins. Some economists and evolutionary theorists, however, suggest that greed is a good thing for stimulating the economy, and greed may give people an evolutionary advantage (more resources = better chances of survival). Recent research has explored the effects of the trait of greediness on economic and psychological outcomes.

Greed is defined as an excessive and insatiable desire. That desire can be for more money, more power, more things, or even more sex/sexual partners. It is tied to materialismenvy, and self-interest.

A recent study (Hoyer, et al., 2022) gave people a measure of trait greediness (example items are below) and self-interest, and asked about a number of outcomes (e.g., income, number of sexual partners, and satisfaction with life). The research suggests that greed and self-interest, although correlated, are different constructs. Here are the results simply looking at greed and outcomes.

Interestingly, males tended to be greedier than females, and older persons were less greedy than younger ones. At the economic level, there was some evidence that greedy individuals had higher incomes than did less greedy individuals. In addition, greedy people had more sexual partners—all of this suggesting that greed does, in fact, lead to people wanting and acquiring more.

In terms of psychological outcomes, although greedy people had more, they expressed less satisfaction with life. Another interesting finding was that greedy individuals tended to have shorter-lasting relationships and fewer children. Maybe the Beatles were right: Money (and greed) can’t buy you love?

What are some indicators that a person is greedy? Here are some items from various measures of trait greed. Stronger agreement with these statements indicates higher levels of greed.

  • As soon as I have acquired something, I start to think about the next thing I want.
  • My life motto is “More is better.”
  • The pursuit of more and better is an important goal in life for me.
  • When something is being shared, I try to get as big a share as possible.
  • One can never have too much money.
  • My actions are strongly focused on material things.
  • I can’t imagine having too many things.
  • Even when I am fulfilled, I often seek more.

So, is greed good or bad? It depends. While greed might lead to financial security, it doesn’t seem very good for relationships, or for one’s happiness and well-being.
