Here l sit, at a loss for words, staring at this notepad, an empty page staring back at me... how do l tell her, what should l say?
I glance across the table at her Mona Lisa smile, her angelic face resting quite comfortably in the palm of her hand, elbow strategically placed, a support for this wondrous work of art.
"l am the luckiest man in the world," think l, as she hands me her pen.
Suddenly... l know what to write.
My Dearest Wife,
l am leaving you today, forever.
l never thought in all these years of our marriage that l could bring myself to hurt you in such a manner but, you see my darling, l have met someone new.
She's always been there... waiting.
How was l to know, l was waiting, too.
When first l laid my eyes upon her, I was drawn like a moth to a flame, and in that moment, l knew... l was lost.
Fate has rendered me senseless, and so...
She has asked me to run away with her and l have accepted her invitation with not so much as the blink of an eye.
l suppose it sounds cruel and l know you must think me cowardly to leave you with but a note and no chance of spoken words but, l know you quite well, my love, and you would insist on meeting her. This just cannot be for l fear you also would become enchanted as l have and we must think of the children.
l place down the pen as tears begin to well at the thought of our children, my lovely girls...
I glance across the table and she sends a reassuring wink which instantly dries
my eyes and strengthens my resolve.
She places her pen back into my hand and l continue...
Please know, my dear, my love for you remains steadfast and our life together has filled me with joy beyond words. Try not to think ill of me, some things are just meant to be.
Kiss the girls for me and let them know their Daddy will always love them...
Goodbye, my love
Your Loving Husband...
Once again, l place down her pen and gaze into her beautiful eyes. "It is done," say l, "shall we?"
She leans across the table to give me a kiss as l raise the pistol to my head...
