Silly Little Annoyances

At my house we’ve been playing a fun game at the dinner table lately. If you’re here regularly, you might remember a recent post where I talked about our family question game…

Essentially it’s a game where we take turns asking each person at the table an open ended question. My kids think it’s awesome and they come up with the most interesting questions.

We often play this game when we have company and it turns into a great conversation starter and often provides a lot of laughs.

One evening my parents were over and we thought we would play - it turned into an evening of laughs because when it was my mom’s turn to ask the questions, she turned to my dad and said “what do I do that annoys you the most?”

She said it with her tongue in cheek because they had just gotten over a little spat before they came over. As she asked, it they both started chuckling. My dad proceeded to answer and we all had a laugh about that because it was one of those silly little things in a relationship that makes you feel annoyed, but at the end of the day it’s such an insignificant thing.

As it would go, we all started asking our spouses this question because we were all laughing so hard and having such a fun time poking fun at each other. When it came time for me to answer what annoys me most about my husband, I looked at him and told him that the way he drinks water annoys me the most.

Everyone looked at me for further explanation, so I proceeded to tell them about how my husband takes the biggest longest gulps of water every time he drinks. He is working on increasing his water intake and has an alarm reminder on his phone. So every time it goes of he picks up his HUGE water bottle and chugs it down. Just when you think he will be done, he keeps glugging more water down. It annoys me and makes me laugh all at the same time.

Everyone was howling with laughter as I imitated him drinking his water…it’s become a big family joke now.

In a relationship, we all have these little annoyances that drive us absolutely crazy! I know in the grand scheme of things, it’s nothing and I’m so fortunate to have such minor annoyances…but it still drives me crazy!

What is something silly that your spouse does that drives you crazy?

Quote of the day

"The first draft of my vows, which I wrote the day after we got engaged, clocked in at around 70 pages." —Parks and Recreation

Article of the day - These are the top 40 most annoying things our partners do, according to research

A third of people in a relationship consider their other half to be the 'most annoying person they know’ because of their irritating habits.

A poll of 2,000 people found they typically spend a fifth of the day feeling annoyed at their partner because of snoring, passing wind, loudness, messiness and rudeness.

Other top gripes include never listening, talking through TV shows and being bad with money.

While leaving crumbs on the kitchen side, using their phone mid-conversation and leaving clothes on the bedroom floor were other top annoying traits.

But 41 per cent secretly love their partner’s irritating habits - and wouldn't have them any other way.

LG Electronics commissioned the research as part of a campaign to show how smart technology can lessen the friction between couples at home.

Marina Clowes, from LG Electronics, said: “It’s no surprise to see some of the most common annoying partner habits that Brits have voted on, I’m sure we can all relate to some of these.

“It is interesting to see how many of these can be solved if you have the right smart technology products at home though, like TVs with algorithms that learn your preferred viewing genre, noise-cancelling earbuds, and even steam closets to revive your ‘floordrobe’ items.

“We recognise the importance of the benefits tech products bring to families and life at home.

"We are always looking to see how we can add value and make them smarter, so your time becomes more available to do the things you love.”

Respondents also said their partners have an average of five annoying habits – and estimate they have the same amount.

And 37 per cent reckon they annoy each other equally, though more than a quarter of men reckon they irritate their spouse more.

But it’s the minor niggles that 68 per cent end up getting wound up by.

Although while more than a third will call out annoying behaviour every time, 52 per cent pick their moment more carefully.

And when they do so, the reaction from their partner is to laugh about it and play it down according to a quarter, while one in five say they’re completely ignored and only 15 per cent apologise.

Nearly half admit to finding their other half more irritating since the pandemic began due to spending more time together in close proximity, with a third believing their relationship is under more pressure than ever.

While 45 per cent also confessed to getting jealous of other couples and the relationship they have with each other, according to the study via OnePoll.

Nearly six in 10 also admitted they bicker with their partner about what to watch on the TV.

And when asked who usually wins in an argument, four out of 10 said ‘nobody’.

However, positives to come out of the lockdowns included spending more time together generally, sharing more responsibility when it comes to chores and taking up new activities together.

LG Electronics has teamed up with Emma Bunton and her husband Jade Jones to show how smart technology can help lessen the friction between couples at home.

The Spice Girl has taken to Instagram[https://www.instagram.com/emmaleebunton/reels/] to show a peek into her family life.

Emma Bunton said: “Over the past 18 months we have all spent a lot more time at home.

“From entertaining the kids to making work commitments easier to do from home, when your technology has you covered it gives you quality time with your family and space for you to live your best life."
