The Search for Happiness

Money Does Not Equal Happiness

Many years ago I heard a quote from a guy named Zig Ziglar that always makes me chuckle. He said “money isn’t everything, but it ranks right up there with oxygen.”

I love this statement because it so eloquently outlines everything that runs through my head when I think about money and happiness. Money does not buy our happiness, but money is important in our world and it affords us the opportunity to do a lot of cool things.

When I think about myself, I am striving to build wealth for my family. Not as a source of happiness, but as a resource that can be used to do great things in the world.

Almost everything that we want to do requires resources - and money is a resource. If you want to help single moms, it requires resources. If you want to build an orphanage in a developing country, it requires resources. If you want to create a food program for underprivileged children in schools, it requires resources. If you want to improve your health, it requires resources.

Everything requires some sort of input or resource. So if we learn to think about money as a resource, rather as something to hoard that we think gives us security, then I believe that money does not buy us happiness, but it allows us to contribute to the world and have purpose.

That’s not to say that you can’t make a difference without money. Time is another great resource that we have and so is sweat equity. You can create huge change in the world with those resources as well - but think about it…add some money into that equation and now you can accelerate the change that you are working towards.

So if you ask me, Zig Ziglar’s quote is profound. Money is necessary in our world - not only that, it’s an incredibly valuable resource. Money does not make us happy (and it never will), but when we use it to help others and create value in the world, it brings us a sense or purpose.
