Be Careful With Your Influence

You are more powerful than you think. There are people who are influenced by you and your decisions.

The thing is that many of us do not feel like we are influential people - I know I often feel like I would have little sway over what anyone thinks, says, or does. However, the more I think about that, the more I recognize how untrue it is.

It is a dangerous game to play when we do not think intentionally about our influence.

When I think specifically about my children and the amount of influence I have on them, it actually causes me to pause and take a deep breath. It’s a big responsibility to hold influence over anyone, but over your children is huge! You can influence them in positive ways or negative ways. 

Your words alone hold a lot of power. In fact, I’ve heard it said before that words hold the power of life and death. Your actions also matter greatly because when we don’t walk the proverbial talk, there is a lack of integrity that is influential in a really negative way.

It makes me think about a time about a year ago when my smallest child was just 2 years old. She was quite the moody little thing for awhile there between teething and tiredness and my husband and I would often say… “she’s really grouchy right now…” We weren’t trying to be negative towards her, but the words started to sink in for her and before we knew it, she was walking around saying “I’m grouchy!” quite often.

We quickly realized that our influence over her with words was creating her reality. So we stopped saying that the very same day. And slowly, she stopped saying it too.

Influence is something we need to be thinking about regularly - whether you have kids or not! Be careful with your influence.
