Finding A Career That You Love

I’m right at the stage where I am considering what it would look like to return to work after being at home with my kids for the last 7 years. Before that, I owned a local coffee shop and was self employed so it’s been over a decade since I have actually worked for someone else.

Next year, my youngest will be starting Kindergarten, so it’s been on my mind that at some point soon, I could be looking at returning to work.

The thought of going back to my old career is one that I am not keen on. I used to work in Human Resource Management, and I did not like sitting at a desk all day. At this point, I’ve been starting to do some research on finding a career that I will love.

One influencer that I’ve found particularly insightful is Ken Coleman’s from the Ramsey Network. He has a “7 Stages of Career Clarity” checklist that I’ve been working through. This framework isn’t just about finding a job, but about discovering work that aligns with your passions, talents, and purpose.

Here’s a quick recap of his 7 Stages of Career Clarity.

  1. Discover Your Talents: What are you naturally good at? What skills do you possess that come easily to you? This isn't just about formal qualifications, but innate abilities.

  2. Define Your Passion: What do you genuinely care about? What problems do you want to solve, or what causes do you feel drawn to? Passion fuels perseverance.

  3. Develop Your Skills: Once you identify your talents and passions, how can you hone your existing skills and acquire new ones to become excellent in that area? Continuous learning is key.

  4. Determine Your Mission: What unique contribution can you make to the world using your talents, passions, and skills? This is your "why."

  5. Dedicate Your Efforts: Focus your energy and time on opportunities that align with your clarity. This often means saying "no" to distractions that don't serve your mission.

  6. Discipline Your Schedule: Create a routine and structure that supports your career goals. This includes time for learning, networking, and productive work.

  7. Do the Work: Ultimately, clarity is useless without action. Take consistent steps, even small ones, towards your ideal career.

For me, looking at this framework has really emphasized the importance of self-reflection before I dive back into the work world. It's not just about what jobs are available, but about understanding what genuinely energizes me and how I can use my unique gifts to contribute. While I enjoyed aspects of HR, it didn't align with my desire for more active, less desk-bound work. Now, as I consider my next steps, I'm thinking about how I can leverage my organizational skills and passion for community in a new, more fulfilling way. Life is full of endings and new beginnings, and I’m hoping that this stage of life will be an exciting new beginning for me!
