Multi-Level Marketing

I recently had a very frustrating conversation with a friend of mine who has started in multi-level marketing (MLM).

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the MLM industry. In fact, I think it’s a brilliant system and affords people the opportunity to make some extra money without all the headache of building their own business systems and processes (and without having to manage all the inventory!).

However, I think that the way some people are taught to do MLM is a real shame. I have been part of the MLM industry in the past (unsuccessfully lol!), and I was taught some scammy techniques to try and get people bought in. I was taught to make a list of 100 people I knew who I could convince to come to a meeting or on a 3-way phone call with my upline. We were then supposed try to convince them that they needed the product and the opportunity. It always felt like a terrible thing to do and I felt like a greasy salesman. I never really did it because I couldn’t bring myself to look at every friend or acquaintance as a business opportunity to take advantage of.

The industry has changed a lot over the years with social media, which I think is for the better. The problem is that there are still people who are using those old, greasy sales tactics - and that turns people off from the industry all together.

This friend of mine recently told me that she had started an entrepreneurship journey with her husband. I was interested and excited for her so I tried to ask her what the business was. She proceeded to circle the wagon by telling me she was leveraging systems and processes to make a whole bunch of money. I asked a follow up question if this meant she was in a direct sales company or an MLM business and she replied with “I don’t really know what you mean.”

I laughed out loud when I read this because by this point I could tell she was being taught some outdated MLM techniques about making people ask you the questions and getting them interested by being evasive. To be honest, it was a really frustrating conversation and I tried to not be frustrated with my friend because I know she is just trying to do her best for her family.

The moral of the story is that if your business leaders are telling you to not tell someone what your business is, you should maybe find a different mentor. In my opinion, being evasive and greasy is not a great way to build a lasting business.

Interesting Fact #1

MLM stands for multi-level marketing. It is a distribution model characterized by independent, non-salaried, company representatives selling products or services to consumers. These representatives are then paid via two potential earnings streams: 1) commissions for products they sell directly to end, retail customers, and 2) commissions they make for products sold by other people they have recruited to sell for the company, referred to as their "down line." This process of recruiting other sellers to earn additional income forms a pyramid shape, which is why MLMs are often referred to as pyramid selling. The first representative often has the most earnings potential because they earn commissions on sales from all the representatives recruited below them.

Interesting Fact #2

MLMs are not new. The first MLM began in the 1880s and is still in operation today. Avon initially began when a traveling book salesman offered beauty products as a free gift with purchase. When he realized customers were more interested in the beauty products than the books, he started a beauty company and recruited a team of women to be sales representatives. Today, the Direct Selling Association, the national trade association for MLMs has nearly 200 member firms, though it is estimated there are more than 1,000 firms selling via this model in the US alone.

Interesting Fact #3

The flexible schedule network marketing provides - with the ability to set your own hours and work as much or as little as you like, often makes MLMs attractive to women, and especially stay at home moms. Many have left careers to care for their children, but still want to earn their own income or replace the income they left behind. Some see it as a social outlet too.

Article of the day - Unleashing the Power of Network Marketing: Embracing the Future of Entrepreneurship

In the fast-paced world of business, traditional models have faced challenges from various innovative approaches. One such revolutionary concept that has gained immense popularity is network marketing. Embracing the principles set forth by visionaries like J Paul Getty, this distribution model has proven to be a powerful force, challenging conventional norms of business. In this article, we delve into the fascinating world of network marketing, comparing it with traditional business, Amazon, regular jobs, and even lotteries, to explore how this industry has evolved and thrived.

1. Traditional Business vs. Network Marketing: A Paradigm Shift

Traditionally, people believed in earning through their own hard work and dedication. However, network marketing redefines the landscape by offering a unique opportunity to earn a share of profits generated by an expanding network of distributors. While traditional business models have limitations, such as high start-up costs, inventory management, and fixed hours, network marketing enables individuals to create residual income and enjoy the flexibility to work on their own terms.

Imagine having the ability to earn even when you're not actively working, thanks to the collective efforts of your network. This passive income stream empowers network marketers to enjoy financial freedom and pursue their dreams without being tied to a desk or office.

2. Amazon vs. Network Marketing: The Power of Personal Recommendations

Amazon, the e-commerce giant, has revolutionized the way people shop, but it lacks the personal touch that network marketing brings to the table. While Amazon relies on algorithms to recommend products, network marketing taps into the power of word-of-mouth advertising. Independent distributors passionately share their product experiences, creating authentic connections with potential customers.

In the world of network marketing, relationships are at the core of every success story. Distributors build genuine bonds with their customers, understanding their needs, and offering personalized solutions. This human element is the driving force behind network marketing's growth and success.

3. Regular Jobs vs. Network Marketing: Embracing Financial and Time Freedom

The modern job landscape is characterized by increasing uncertainty, with job seekers often facing stagnant wages and limited opportunities for growth. Network marketing offers an attractive alternative, providing the potential for unlimited earnings and time freedom. Unlike traditional jobs with rigid schedules, network marketing allows entrepreneurs to build their businesses around their lives, resulting in greater work-life balance.

No more trading time for money. Network marketing presents an opportunity to prioritize what truly matters – spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing passions, and enjoying life's little pleasures, all while building a thriving business.

4. Lotteries vs. Network Marketing: The Reality of Sustainable Success

Lotteries have long enticed people with the promise of instant wealth, but the chances of winning are incredibly slim. On the other hand, network marketing offers a realistic pathway to success through hard work, dedication, and consistency. It is not a get-rich-quick scheme but a sustainable business opportunity that allows individuals to tap into their entrepreneurial potential and reap the rewards over time.

One common mistake people make in network marketing is treating it like a lottery ticket. They approach a few prospects, and if they don't see immediate results, they give up. Network marketing requires patience, consistency, and continuous efforts to build a thriving business. Just like scratching a few lottery tickets won't guarantee a win, instant success in network marketing is rare. Those who persevere and stay committed to the process reap the rewards of long-term success.

5. The Success Stories of Network Marketing Pioneers

J Paul Getty's quote about preferring a small percentage of many people's efforts over his own individual effort resonates deeply with the spirit of network marketing. Over the years, numerous success stories have emerged from the network marketing industry, illustrating how ordinary people have achieved extraordinary success through teamwork, mentorship, and a passion for their products.

These pioneers serve as beacons of inspiration, showing that with determination and perseverance, anyone can create their own success story within the network marketing world.

6. Network Marketing as a Consultative Approach

One of the main objections faced by network marketers is the perception of being salespeople. However, the key to successful network marketing lies in adopting a consultative approach. By focusing on educating and helping others, network marketers can dispel the salesman image and build genuine, long-lasting relationships.

Instead of pressuring prospects into making quick decisions, network marketers prioritize understanding their needs and providing valuable solutions tailored to each individual.

7. Network Marketing's Journey Towards Professionalism

For decades, network marketing faced criticism due to a lack of professionalism and overselling. However, the industry has evolved, with top earners becoming advocates for professionalizing the field. The focus has shifted towards education, communication skills, and creating value for consumers, thereby elevating the industry's reputation.

Today, network marketers emphasize personal growth and skill development to create a positive impact on their communities and change the perception of the industry.

8. The Power of Growth and Contribution

To succeed in network marketing, individuals must continuously grow their skills and contribute positively to others' lives. The hunger for success, combined with a commitment to adding value, forms the foundation for thriving in this industry.

Network marketing's philosophy of mutual growth and support fosters a culture where success is shared and celebrated, making it a truly empowering and uplifting community.

Using the Power of Social Media in Network Marketing

Social media has been a game-changer for network marketing, allowing distributors to reach their prospects on a global scale. However, success on social media requires authenticity, relationship building, and providing genuine value to the audience.

Through strategic and genuine engagement, network marketers can attract a wider audience and establish their authority as trusted industry experts.

10. The Support System of Network Marketing Companies

One of the advantages of network marketing is the robust support provided by companies. From product development and customer service to training and tools, these companies ensure distributors can focus on building their businesses without worrying about logistical issues.

Conclusion

Network marketing has emerged as a formidable force in the world of entrepreneurship, offering individuals a pathway to financial freedom and personal growth. By comparing network marketing with traditional business, Amazon, regular jobs, and lotteries, we can see how this unique model has revolutionized the way we think about earning income and achieving success. As the industry continues to evolve and professionalize, more and more people are embracing the power of network marketing to transform their lives and the lives of others around them. With passion, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning, network marketing opens doors to a brighter and more prosperous future, where financial and time freedom become attainable goals for all.
