Setting Appropriate Goals

Do you have a goal that you are currently working towards? Further to that, is it an appropriate goal? Or is it one that you have set so unrealistically high that you are almost bound to fail?

I know there are a lot of gurus out there that tell you to “shoot for the moon, and even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars…”

I believe that this is actually a really bad idea for most people. Psychologically, it causes us to doubt our abilities because we know that we cannot do it; then, we simply don’t even try. 

Has that ever happened to you?

I always like the example of a push up. If you set yourself a goal to do 100 push ups per day starting today, but you cannot even currently do 1, then you are setting an inappropriate goal.

The chances of you even trying are slim to none because your brain knows that you cannot do 100. You’ve set yourself up for failure before you’ve even begun.

So what should you do? Well, in my opinion, we need small baby step goals that we know we can accomplish. 

Let’s continue with the push up example - rather than set yourself a goal of 100, set yourself a goal of 1 or 2 pushups each day this week. It sounds so small and insignificant that it seems silly to even set it as a goal. But the thing is that once you get down on the floor to do your 1 or 2 push ups and you succeed, the chances of you continuing and maybe even doing 5 or 6 is quite high! If you continue on that trajectory, soon you will be doing more and more push ups. 

Keep increasing your goal slowly over time and you will continue to improve.

It’s fine to set a big ultimate goal of wanting to do 100 push ups, but you have to break it down into small baby steps, otherwise you will never get there.
