API 5L covers both seamless and welded steel line pipe. Standard-weight and extra-strength threaded line pipe are examples. It includes standard-weight and extra-strong threaded line pipe, as well as standard-weight plain-end, regular-weight plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end pipe, bell and spigot, and TFL pipe.
The goal of this specification is to provide standards for pipe used in the oil and natural gas industries for conveying gas, water, and oil.
API 5L Pipe specifications meet International Organization for Standardization ISO 3183, making them suitable for pipeline transportation systems for materials, equipment, and offshore structures used in the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries. The standards' technical committee recognised that there are two basic product specification levels (PSLs) of technical requirements and thus developed PSL 1 and PSL 2. PSL 1 is a standard line pipe quality, whereas PSL 2 has additional chemical, mechanical, and testing requirements.
