It really upsets me when people who have the drive and ambition to do well online are taken under the wing of someone (aka A Mentor) who doesn't guide them into the correct practices or even help them get their website loved and ranked by Google.
Google rank your website by looking at over 200 points. Following are 10 Tips for all those 'unloved' in getting your website recognised online.
1) Pick your Domain Carefully
Having your main keyword or phrase in your domain name (eg YourNetBiz) wins mega brownie points with Google. As a domain name is registered and can't just be 'adjusted' like other parts of your website then it holds a lot of weight on your ranking score.

2) Don't Do Duplicate Content
Many YourNetBiz members will provide you with a 'standard' capture page. Most of the time the focus for this page you are given is to INCREASE their exposure and promote THEM NOT YOU. Google hates duplicate content and will penalise you on anything that is 70% or more the same as another website.
Take your time and write some original content for your website and dump the capture page you were given... not only will this aid you in getting ranked by Google, but it will also give your site visitors something different to read and there will be more chance they will stay on your site to find out more.
3) Identify your Keywords and Phrases
When Google searches your YourNetBiz page they will 'crawl' the content. Due to the fact that Google base its results on relevance, ensure that you have the main keywords and phrases repeated in your site. For your number 1 keyword (probably YourNetBiz), I would recommend that you aim for about 3% keyword density. Don't over do the word repetition though as Google will look at you as trying to 'cheat the system'.

4) Don't display your titles as Images
OK, having your titles as images on the YourNetBiz capture page looks snazzy... but the fact is that Google can not read images. for this reason its always a good idea to put any titles with keywords that you want to be ranked in text.... bold it too as this shows Google its important!
4) Broken Images and Links
Not only does it look bad from the point of a prospective YourNetBiz member looking for a Mentor, but broken images and links makes it hard for Google to 'crawl' your site. Make sure that EVERY page has all the images and links working.
5) Include your main keyword in your page title and description
Re-enforce your main keywords in your page title and description.... remember, don't go silly and 'keyword stuff' it and when you are ranked on the 1st page of Google you want a description that people will want to click on!
6) Use ALT descriptions on your images
The ALT tag is allocated to images as an 'Image description'. This helps that accessibility of the site and helps Google catagorise it under Google Images. Ok, it doesn't add a massive amount of extra 'Google Juice' to your site but you might get extra traffic from your photos being listed on Google Images!
7) Add a sitemap to your website
Add a Google sitemap to your web directory and update it after each web update you do... this will help Google navigate through your site and will mean that they will come back more often to update your Google index.

8) Update your content on a regular basis
Search engines love new content and this is one of the reasons Blogs rank so well within Google. Keep your content new and fresh... not only is this good for your returning visitors but also for your ranking.
9) Don't panic about your meta keywords tag...
When the internet first come about, the Meta keywords tag was probably the most important part of your website and allowed you to put in all of the keywords that related to your website. The way the search engines index websites now is a lot different and to be honest, the keywords tag hold very little if any weight on your websites ranking.
10) Its not a race!
Don't expect your website to just jump straight to page 1! These things take a little time and work. Being consistent and a little patient, you will see your site gradually move up the rankings and you can then make the most of all that FREE traffic and sales!
I hope these tips have helped you a little in improving your website and would love any comments that you have.
