Approximately 80% of EV (Electric Vehicle) owners charge their battery at home. However, CCS (Combined Charging System) is favored over other chargers as they allow planning long road trips. They provide vehicles with quick top-ups. India is a vast country. Many people require covering long distances to reach the working workplace, visit their relatives, or enjoy pleasure rides. CCS fast chargers are valuable.
About CCS chargers
They are a standard charging system developed to fast-charge electric vehicles. They combine DC (Direct Current) and AC (Alternating Current) charging within a single connector. The objective is to make the charger compatible with different EV models. At the base, CCS uses a Level-2 charger and has two additional Direct Current power lines that enable carrying high voltage. The standard type-2 charger’s connector has two holes at the bottom. They are meant for CCS plug and remain unused.
Need for fast charging device!
As the country progresses to derive a better economy, on-the-road top-ups for EVs are in high demand. CCS connectors are high-speed chargers. The number of ports is currently less and is expected to grow soon. To meet growing immediate charging needs, manufacturers are deploying fast-charging EV stations across the country.
Why CCS chargers?
Extensive charging is not a luxury, but a basic necessity to promote EV sales in the country. CCS technology is popular because of its fast charging capabilities, convenience, and compatibility. It provides EV drivers with a hassle-free charging experience. They offer numerous benefits.
Benefits derived
- Convenience: This connector combines both DC and AC charging. It simplifies and quickens the charging process. They handle different EV models with ease.
- Fast charging: Compared to AC chargers, DC fast chargers deliver about 350kW power output. They reduce charging times considerably and enable long-distance travel.
- Range assurance: CCS chargers are installed in public charging stations across the country, in urban areas, and on highways. EV drivers can now take longer trips with confidence.
- Widespread compatibility: They are the standard solution for a densely populated country like India. They are compatible with different EV models and make. Hence, locating a public charging station is easy.
- Pubic charging networks: Most charging network providers prefer adopting modern CCS technology. Thus, EV drivers can derive better access to CCS fast charger in Delhi.
CCS charger types
- CCS2 (CCS Combo 2): It is the CCS’ European version and is also called IEC 62196-3. For level-2 AC charging, it combines a type-2 connector with a DC CCS fast-charging connector.
- CCS1 (CCS Combo 1): For Level-2 AC charging, it combines the SAE J1772 standard connector with the DC CCS fast-charging connector.
How to charge with CCS Charger?
- Locate CCS charging station: Use a dedicated locator website, app, or built-in EV navigation system to locate the nearest CCS charging station. Check the charger’s compatibility with the EV model.
- Prepare: After locating the station, park your vehicle before the CCS charger and turn it off or ensure it is in ‘park mode’. The charger cable should easily reach your EV’s charging port.
- Unlock charger: A few chargers at public charging stations might require tapping a card, using an app, or scanning the QR Code. It is to initiate your EV’s charging session. Follow the operator manual for correct charging instructions.
- Open charging port: Your vehicle might have a locked charging port. Press the touchscreen control panel of your vehicle or use the key fob to unlock the charging port.
- Connect the cable: Insert the charging cable into your vehicle’s CCS connector. Secure the connector properly to ensure it is fit onto the charger. It ensures a smooth flow of charge into your vehicle’s battery.
- Initiate charging: After securing the cable through the dedicated app or charger’s interface. Then, confirm your charging session. After your confirmation, follow the prompts and initiate the charging process.
- Charging progress: Check the app or charger screen to monitor charging progress. It displays information like charging energy delivered, speed, and time remaining.
- Terminate the session: Terminate the session once you are ready to start your journey or your vehicle is charged. It involves tapping the card again, using the dedicated app or the charger’s interface.
