A Complete Unknown Afdah goes over the years 1961–1965, when Dylan moves from Minnesota to New York City, meets Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and joins the Greenwich Village folk scene. Then meets Joan Baez, and develops a relationship with Sylvie, an artist and activist whose principles encourage him to write "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" during the Cuban Missile Crisis and perform at the 1963 March on Washington. Dylan and his band's 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance, which many praised as the bridging of traditional folk and rock music, marked the final stage of this era. They played electric instruments instead of classical ones. Along the way, we witness his reactions to his unexpected and unwelcome sudden success.
