We're all guilty of it. We buy a product advertised on television that promises a happier you. Yes, if you buy this new car, you'll be so much better off. You'll be like the guy in the commercial driving in sunsets with the wind blowing in his hair. You'll be carefree. If you buy that new dress, you'll look like a goddess. If you look the part, you'll feel the part.
So one patiently waits for the package in the mail. The item is usually beautifully wrapped in a box. Of course the contents with such pretty packaging ensures this will forever change our lives. We excitedly open the box and rip any wrapping. We touch our product and for a short time, we are content. Two weeks later, we receive our credit card statement on the item we bought. On that day, that initial purchase that promised to make us happy, makes us angry or sad. Money wasted.
Plastic paying for plastic. It's human nature to fill a void of unhappiness with outside influences. Some may drink, gamble, eat, shop, anything to the extreme. All this in order not to feel the pain of sadness. Life is filled with polar opposites. In order to know light, one must know darkness. In order to feel healthy, one must know sickness. We must embrace whatever it is that we are feeling.
In order to feel happiness, we must feel the sadness. The valuable lesson is understanding that happiness isn't inside a decorated box. Happiness is in you. You are the decorated box, but your content is invaluable.
