In a groundbreaking collaboration, iconic British luxury carmaker Aston Martin and California's Lucid Group, creators of the powerful Lucid Air Sapphire, have joined hands to spearhead the future of electric supercars. Announced recently, this partnership will see Lucid provide Aston Martin with cutting-edge powertrain and battery technology for its all-new electric-only platform, propelling the British automaker's offerings into a new era of electrification. And the beginning of it is the Aston Martin Valhalla.
At the heart of this collaboration lies Lucid's impressive current and future powertrain and battery technologies, which have proven themselves in the awe-inspiring Lucid Air range. The Lucid Air boasts a spectrum of performance options, ranging from a single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup delivering 424bhp and a remarkable range of 406 miles to an astonishing triple-motor all-wheel-drive battery and powertrain, generating a jaw-dropping 1,200bhp+ and achieving a mind-blowing 0-60mph time of under 2.0 seconds. Aston Martin's chairman, Lawrence Stroll, was left suitably impressed by the prowess of Lucid's technology, declaring that they have gained access to the industry's highest performance and most innovative technologies for their future battery electric vehicle (BEV) products.
The future of Aston Martin's electrification journey will commence with the introduction of the Valhalla, the company's first plug-in hybrid, set to hit the roads in 2024. Following closely, Aston Martin plans to release its maiden all-electric car in 2025, featuring the brand-new BEV platform integrated with Lucid's state-of-the-art technology. By 2026, all of Aston Martin's new model lines will offer electrified powertrain options, cementing the company's commitment to a greener, electrified future.
It's important to note that the collaboration with Lucid will complement Aston Martin's continued partnership with Mercedes-AMG, which will continue to supply engines and electric architectures for the current and next-generation vehicles spanning internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, and full electric.
Under the banner of 'Racing. Green.', this ambitious £2bn electrification drive aims to transform Aston Martin into a fully-electric automaker within the next five years, setting the stage for a future powered purely by electrons by 2030. The journey towards full electrification represents what Aston describes as an 'elemental challenge,' with the goal of offering a future lineup of exceptional electric vehicles (EVs) characterized by unrivaled battery efficiency, all-wheel drive with four-wheel torque vectoring, active aerodynamics, and drag reduction. With the absence of the internal combustion engine, these EVs will feature sleek, wind-cheating bodywork, enabling a seamless flow of air without the need to feed a hungry engine.
Roberto Fedelli, Aston Martin's technical boss, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Lucid, stating that it will allow the creation of a single bespoke BEV platform suitable for all future Aston Martin products, spanning from hypercars to sports cars and SUVs. Furthermore, Aston Martin will continue to expand its in-house powertrain capabilities, promising customers the thrilling performance and intense driving experience that they have come to expect and love from the iconic brand.
As Aston Martin and Lucid Group join forces, the automotive world awaits the unleashing of their electrifying vision, promising to revolutionize the world of supercars and pave the way towards a more sustainable and electrifying future.
