Office 365 E1
Microsoft 365 E1 is the basic version of Enterprise. This application includes some familiar office tools that provide 1TB of cloud storage per customer in OneDrive for Business. Users can store files in OneDrive, as well as it can be easily shared with anyone and from any location. It can be used offline by synchronizing it with desktops and laptops. This helps teams in the organization to work faster.
The disadvantage of using Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise E1 is that the application cannot be installed on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. One needs to upgrade their Office to Office 2013 and Mac Office 2011 for the experience-rich version of Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise E1. Microsoft Enterprise E1 empowers your teams and helps you experience the best services you want and moving to the cloud makes managing your team easier.
Office 365 E3
Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise E3 is an improved version of Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise E1. It is comparatively expensive compared to Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise E1 due to its better features. Microsoft 365 E3 is user-friendly and can be used anywhere and anytime which makes your work easier. Its compliance request is simple and it has upgraded data security which helps to keep your data safe.
Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise E3 helps to reduce IT investment as it gives you control over your work and automates it by moving them to the cloud. It also gives you full license authority to each user. The common concern raised by users is “Will my data remain safe even after I cancel the subscription?” This is an important thing to note as security plays a major role in every organization.

Microsoft Office 365 E5
Microsoft Office 365 E5 is the advanced version as compared to Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise E1 and E3. The cost price of this version is slightly higher. You can connect your infrastructure with one platform for calling, conferencing, video, and sharing.

Microsoft 365 E1
The E1 package is the most basic of the three packages we consider in this list and, as you would expect, the cheapest. It offers “core” cloud business functionality including email with Microsoft Outlook, file storage and sharing with OneDrive, and some security controls like multi-factor authentication.
Features
Office: You can access Microsoft’s Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) only on the web and mobile devices. You cannot use the desktop version of these applications.
Email: Email is available with Outlook, with a mailbox size of 50GB. You have access to calendar and contact functionality, as well as email archiving. Keep in mind that you can't install a desktop client for Outlook, and will only be able to access emails in the web-based portal.
File sharing: SharePoint and Yammer are included, allowing users to share and collaborate on files (again, this is only possible on mobile or in the web version of the cloud Office applications). Up to 1TB of storage is included for each user.
Analytics: Some basic analytics are included, such as productive scores and compliance management.
Security
Email: It will block basic spam, but won't be as effective against more sophisticated email attacks.
Identity and access management: Supports single sign-on and multi-factor authentication.
Recommendation
We would recommend E1 only for businesses that don't want to use the Office cloud applications but need basic email and file sharing functionality. The service is more cost-effective than E3 when considering this use case.
If you're investing in E1, we recommend that you implement a third-party email security solution to protect your business from sophisticated phishing and ransomware attacks.
Microsoft 365 E3
Microsoft Office 365 E3 is the middle option for Office 365 users, including all of the features of E1, plus the full desktop suite of Office 365 applications and more storage for email and SharePoint. Office 365 E3 can roughly be considered the "Goldilocks" plan: it's not too basic and not too advanced.
The main missing feature here is the advanced email security functionality provided by Defender for Office 365. There are many third-party email security solutions that provide more powerful email protection than Defender (at a more cost-effective price).
Features
Office: Includes the full suite of Microsoft cloud applications.
Email: Email is included with mailbox sizes up to 100GB, with a full range of features.
Analytics: Includes analytics, such as productivity scores and compliance management. Administrators can also manage group policies which are not available in E1.
eDiscovery and auditing: Content search, eDiscovery, and basic auditing features are included.
Security
Email: Emails are protected by Exchange Online Protection. Data loss prevention (DLP) for email and files is also included.
Identity and access management: Supports single sign-on and multi-factor authentication.
Recommendation
E3 is a strong option for most small and medium-sized businesses looking for Microsoft Office applications, email, cloud file management, and file sharing, with strong enterprise analytics and compliance controls. This service provides all the basic enterprise controls that most small businesses need at an affordable price.
The first is security. When it comes to protecting email, this solution only offers Exchange Online Protection (EOP), which filters email for malicious links, spam, and basic phishing attacks. However, this level of protection is very limited, and it will not protect your business from sophisticated email attacks such as social engineering (or "spear-phishing") and ransomware. These attacks are becoming increasingly common and should be a key consideration for your business when deciding which plan to invest in.
However, there are third-party email security solutions available that can provide a much higher level of protection than EOP and indeed Microsoft's email security solution, Defender for Office 365 (available on the E5 plan). These services can be more cost-effective than the price difference between E3 and E5 and are often much easier to install. This is because they use the Microsoft Graph API, so users can be easily onboarded without any MX redirects or new configurations.
Office 365 E5
Microsoft Office 365 E5 can be described as the “premium” Office 365 option, offering the most advanced functionality for businesses. It’s more expensive, has more features, and is split into two plans. For this article, we’ll only consider Plan 2.
The main difference between E3 and E5 is the security functionality. But there are many other benefits, including advanced analytics, compliance and information protection, and advanced retention policies for email. If you want all the features offered by Office 365, E5 is the best option – but it may not always represent the best value.
Features
Office: Includes the full suite of Microsoft cloud applications.
Email: Email is included with mailbox sizes up to 100GB, including the full range of features.
Analytics: Includes analytics such as productivity scores and compliance management. Administrators can also access advanced analytics and auditing unavailable in E1 or E5.
eDiscovery and auditing: Advanced eDiscovery and advanced auditing features are supported.
Security
Identity and access management: Supports single sign-on and multi-factor authentication.
Information security: Automatic sensitivity labels are applied and DLP is also applied to Teams. Rule-based automated collection and advanced auditing are supported.
Insider risk management: Includes communications compliance, information blocking, and privileged access management.
Recommendation
E5 offers the most features and functionality out of the three plans, so from the perspective of getting the best possible version of Office 365, this plan is the most accurate choice. It offers all Office 365 applications, advanced email controls and functionality, as well as improved auditing and analytics.
