Here are five things to remember if you’re considering rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty is a popular choice.
There are many reasons why people choose to have nose surgery. Some people are unhappy with the appearance of their inherited nose. Others may have suffered an injury that altered their nose’s shape. To improve their breathing, some people opt for rhinoplasty.
There are two types of nose job surgery: reduction which reduces the size of your nose, and augmentation which increases its size. You may be eligible for rhinoplasty on the NHS, depending on your situation. If the procedure is for cosmetic reasons only, it will most likely be performed privately.
There are many techniques that a surgeon can use to alter the shape of your nose.
- Modify the angle of your nose and lips
- Straightening a crooked Septum – The central structure of your nose
- Modifying the bridge, nostrils, or tip of your nose

General anesthesia is used for nose jobs, but it may also be possible to use local anesthetic and sedation. The technique used will determine the length of the procedure. It is important to keep in mind that every nose job is custom-tailored for each patient. There is no one-size fits all procedure.
Recovering from a Nose job
You may need to remain in hospital for a few more days after the operation. Most likely, you will be sent home with dressings or splints around your nose. These will need to stay in place for 7-10 days. You may experience some bruising around the eyes, which should disappear within 2-3 weeks. It should be possible to return to work in 2 to 3 weeks. However, it may take a month before you are able to fully function again. The swelling and bruising may take several months or even a whole year to subside. This is before your nose can truly appreciate its new look. Even small changes can make a big difference in how your nose and skin look.
How to choose a Rhinoplasty surgeon
A surgeon should be either a skilled surgeon in plastic surgery or a specialist Ear Nose and Throat surgery. The ideal doctor should have extensive experience performing rhinoplasty. A specialist registered on the General Medical Council’s register may be recommended by your family doctor.
