ANERT stands for ‘New, Renewable Energy Research & Technology’. This agency has devised strategies to set up twenty-five stations in every district or one station in every fifty kilometers in the state. This ambitious plan is to ensure electric vehicle owners get access to public charging points at primary locations. Within a year, the entire charging station network is to be solar-powered.
Calling all private investors
The state government is moving forward with its e-mobility projects and supporting such programs. This agency is devising strategies to attract private investors to contribute to setting up charging stations. Kerala’s road network focuses first on M.C. Road and national highways across the state. The objective is to cover the highways and busy thoroughfares where e-vehicles are increasing and require public charging facilities.
Open invitation to like-minded investors
The agency invites private individuals and potential investors with adequate land to set up charging stations. The government and agency promise to provide the necessary technical backup and equipment to set up the stations. If investors are eager to invest their capital in installing a charging station and lack land, the agency can help identify a suitable location.
Wise approach to invest in charging stations
Electric vehicles are the future. They are increasing in number on the roads with government support and subsidies. Public charging stations are doing their bit to promote its faster adoption. Hence, EVs will become a bigger factor in a few years. Therefore, investing in charging stations will bring profits as people are keen to replace conventional vehicles with electric ones. The agency has conducted surveys in 135 sites across the set where they can set up anert charging station.
Initial plans The agency initially planned to set up a single charging station in every district and cater to the electric vehicle owners. Thiruvananthapuram is part of the program. It will have three charging stations. However, government departments are instructed not to make long-term non-EV rental plans. The objective is to promote electric vehicles in this district. Three hundred e-vehicles will be supplied to different government departments. It also includes local bodies. It will be raised to a thousand soon.
How is the program to be executed?
The agency is planning to purchase EVs through EESL. They will contact the respective government department and sign a contract to provide EVs on rent. Besides this, the agency will bear the vehicle’s maintenance and insurance costs. It helps promote electric vehicle adoption and shows the growing importance of e-vehicles in the state.
Free charging facility for EVs from KSEB for three months
KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) offers free installation of EV charging stations in the state. EV owners can charge their vehicles for free for three months at these charging stations. They will install charging stations in Corporation areas and commence operation soon. However, after three months, EV owners have to pay to charge their vehicles. They may download a dedicated mobile app to pay their EV charging bills.
Areas identified to install charging stations
KSEB has identified several places to install 56 more charging stations across the state. The initial phase of the project includes the installation of six charging stations in selected areas. It includes Kollam (Olayil), Thrissur (Viyyur), Kannur (Chovva), Thiruvananthapuram (Nemam), Palarivattom (Ernakulam), and Kozhikode (Nallalam). More installations are planned for the future.
Promote e-mobility
The state government has been aggressively publishing e-mobility to meet the goals set for 2030. Multiple agencies like ANERT and private players are setting up charging stations. Electric Vehicle owners can use the dedicated mobile app to locate services and enjoy convenient access. Charging stations support commercial e-vehicles and ensure uninterrupted movement. Such steps positively impact the state and the country’s economy.
