I was raised in a household where good manners mattered. I was taught to say please and thank you, greet others with a handshake and a smile, and that good table manners were the rule, not the exception.

I did my best to pass this on to my own children at home, and in public it was expected they would abide by the same standards.

To this day, I find myself reacting with dismay when I encounter ungracious behavior. I came across a recent example of this when a woman I know, a friend of a friend, treated others with graceless disrespect at a birthday party for our mutual acquaintance.

I was embarrassed for the Birthday Girl.

I was embarrassed for the rest of us witnessing this display.

Mostly though, I was embarrassed for the offending woman. I can only hope she was embarrassed for herself.
