Tyson Fury first call retirement then confirm the next fight
It’s hard to keep up with whether heavyweight boxing legend Tyson Fury is retired or not. After his triumph this April over Dillian Whyte at the Wembley Stadium in London, which allowed him to keep his World Boxing Council belt, Tyson Fury declared his permanent retirement from the boxing world. Retiring would also mean giving up his coveted World Heavyweight Championship.
The back and forth between what Fury wants has taken several turns. The boxer announced his wish to fight former unified world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, for no fee. His next u-turn saw him wanting a cool £500 million to go up against legendary Oleksandr Usyk.
Joshua’s social media posts also show him wanting to throw hands with English boxer Derek Chisora, who he has had two previous bouts with. Fury came out unbeaten on both occasions. He couldn’t get the third fight or ‘trilogy’ match with Chisora at that point.
Once more during August, in a post on his social media account, the Gypsy King reiterated his decision to leave boxing, writing: 'I've finally decided to walk away and on my 34th birthday I say bon voyage.' This was echoed by boxing publication The Ring, which confirmed that Fury had left the title vacant and was pulling out of boxing completely.
Fury had also reportedly spoken with the president of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, via video call. Sulaiman also spoke of Fury's retirement, saying: "Tyson Fury [...] has confirmed his official retirement from boxing. We fully support his decision which is a dream for anyone to retire undefeated and as WBC champion of the world."
In true chaotic Fury style, this has once again turned around. Fury decided he would be keeping his title. He is planning to go head to head with his adversary of choice, Usyk, in December of 2022. This fight will be high stakes, with all four belts on the line. Fury’s team of promoters has been tasked with telling the World Boxing Council of his wishes to keep his career going. His goal now is to become the undisputed champion in his weight division, the first of this century since Lennox Lewis last held the title in ‘99.
Fury has most recently been clear about his desire to come back into the boxing world, saying his motivation is to become the first global heavyweight titleholder who has successfully completed two trilogies. These would be against Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder respectively. Fury seemed most eager to fight the former. A video posted on his social media saw him say: “I’d always say I’d fight Derek Chisora at the end of my career and here we are, breaking all records again and setting precedents.” This wasn’t the first time Fury called Chisora out, previously stating that the fighter was trying to escape a third match after he lost in both ‘11 and ‘14. He went as far as to call Chisora a ‘chicken.’ Chisora, to his credit, seemed more than willing to take Fury on, replying with a tweet saying ‘sent the paperwork’.
This seems to be another fight to look forward to in Fury’s reborn boxing career. Sources at ESPN say that planning is underway for a match to take place in December of this year, most likely in Cardiff, Wales. Fury said that his trusted training partner Isaac Lowe would be working with him during training for the fight. Fury might keep trying to put his boxing career in the past, but it seems the sport calls back to him each time. For boxing fans, we’re all just happy to see his legendary fights a few more times.
