Why Powerlifting Scores Matter More Than Total Weight
Many people judge strength by looking only at the weight on the bar. In reality, bodyweight plays a major role in how impressive a lift is. That's why powerlifting uses scoring systems that allow athletes from different weight classes to be compared fairly.
The two most common systems today are DOTS and IPF GL. Instead of comparing raw totals, these formulas calculate a score based on both bodyweight and the amount lifted. This gives coaches and athletes a much clearer picture of performance.
Using these scores is also a great way to track progress. Even if your bodyweight changes during training, your score can show whether your relative strength is improving over time.
If you're curious about your own results, there are free online tools that make the calculation instant. I built one for the powerlifting community that supports DOTS, Wilks, Wilks2, and IPF GL scoring in one place.

Whether you're training for your first meet or simply trying to improve your personal best, understanding these scoring systems provides a more meaningful way to measure progress than looking at total weight alone.
