A "sweatshop" is any factory where people work at poverty wages in unsafe or unhealthy working conditions. While most sweatshops are located overseas, they also exist within the United States.
In 1995, the government raided an El Monte factory and freed 72 Thai immigrants who had been held under slave-like conditions in prison-like cells. Since then, Los Angeles has become known as an epicenter of fast fashion fashion.
