RESPECT

I always thought that Dr. Phil was a bit of a bully. Back in 2002 when his talk show first aired, I found his arrogance and lack of compassion disenchanting. I did, however, take away with me one powerful lesson.
“We teach people how to treat us” was a common theme on his show. I didn’t fully appreciate what result that piece of advice could produce until I put it into play years later, when I realized that starting with me, and the beliefs I held about myself, could set the bar for what kind of treatment was acceptable from others. When I put an end to the negative self-talk and began treating myself with respect, it allowed me to set that standard for the rest of the world – to teach them how to treat me.
Thanks, Dr. Phil.
