Painkiller are types of drugs called analgesics, which are used to treat pain. The greatest difference is that painkillers target the levels of pain you're feeling, by interrupting pain signals before they get to the brain.
What are the risks of using pain relievers?
Anti-inflammatory analgesics are generally safe. But they can cause side effects and complications, if you use them too often, for too long or in very large doses:
- Damage to internal organs, such as the liver or kidneys.
- Heart problems.
- Hypersensitivity response, which is like an allergic reaction.
- Ringing in the ears, or even deafness.
- Stomach ulcers.
- Trouble forming clots in the blood, which can lead to excessive bleeding.
When should I get medical attention for painkiller side effects?
Seek prompt medical attention if you are on a pain medication and experience:
- Allergic reactions like a rash or swelling anywhere on the body.
- Black bowel movements (also called poop or stools).
- Blood or something that looks like coffee grounds in vomit.
- Changes in vision or hearing.
- Trouble urinating, or pee that is cloudy or discolored.
- Yellowish skin or eyes
- Unusual weight gain.
- Stomach pain
How should you take analgesics?
Pain relievers are available in many forms, including:
- Films you place under the tongue to dissolve.
- Liquid you inject into your body with a syringe (needle).
- Liquid you swallow.
- Nasal spray that goes up the nose.
- Patches you place on the skin.
- Pills, tablets or capsules you swallow.
- Powder you mix and take various ways.
Ask your healthcare provider what route is best for you. Your healthcare team can also help you determine the right dose to take, how often and for how long.
Is it safe?
Safety boils down to examining really bad things happening to a very small number of people who take a drug. Unless the rate of the very bad thing is vanishingly small, the authorities won’t let us buy the drug from a petrol station. If we want to study those rare events, then we need study large numbers of people. Partly because paracetamol is such an old drug these studies have largely not been done until recently.
Are we competent to take analgesics
Most people have no idea of the maximum daily dose of paracetamol. In the UK about one in four people frequently exceed the maximum daily dose (it’s 4,000mg, or eight tablets, by the way). In the US, half did not know the maximum daily dose, and one in 20 thought it as high as 10,000m

- Patients who are not taking narcotic medicines: Adults—At first, 10 milligrams (mg) every 12 hours.
Sleep disorders are conditions that affect your ability to get the rest your body needs and maintain wakefulness. There are over 80 sleep disorders that impact:
- How well you sleep (quality).
- When you fall asleep and if you can stay asleep (timing).
- How much sleep and wakefulness you get (quantity or duration).
Everyone can experience problems with sleep from time to time. But you might have a sleep disorder if:
- You regularly have trouble sleeping.
- You feel tired during the day even though you slept for at least seven hours the night before.
- It becomes difficult to perform regular daytime activities.
