The company someone chooses to keep can tell you a lot about that person. Typically our friends are good indicators of how we see ourselves. So when you get a chance to meet the friends of your partner, it is a great chance to learn more about that person. If your partner’s friends are likeable and you get along easily with them, it is an encouraging sign that you could be dating someone who is compatible with you.
Your significant other’s friends can help you determine how important you are to your them. Being introduced to their friends can be an indication that you are a significant part of that person’s life. On the flip side, if you are not given the opportunity to meet the other person’s friends, it might give you reason to question the relationship and ask, “why not?” Is this a signal that you are not as important as you should be?
Meeting your partner’s friends can also tell you a great deal about the person. Our friends are usually the people who have the highest opinion of us, so observing the way friends interact with him or her can be quite revealing. If there is mutual caring and respect, then this is probably a good indication that your partner has solid relationship skills.
A meeting with friends can be particularly helpful when you have met online and have not had much, or any, interaction in person. You can see firsthand whether or not your partner is talkative or less outgoing when with others, as well as observe many other social qualities. Spending time with your significant other’s friends gives you the chance to see how your partner relates socially with peers, not just one-on-one in email, or over the phone. In addition, you can view how your date treats those buddies, which could be a sign of things to come for you.
Meeting the friends isn’t a tried and true way of telling whether or not your relationship with a new partner will succeed, but can be a good learning tool. If nothing else, you are at least meeting new people and getting the opportunity to spend time with them in a group setting. You can never have too many friends, so take the chance to make some new ones!
