FEAR
Sheri Smith

When I first embraced photography it was back in the day when developing my own photos meant standing over chemical baths in a room devoid of ambient light. With great excitement and anticipation I bought the materials and supplies, then went about designing a darkroom in the darkest reaches of our concrete basement. It was easier than I had imagined, as the room was devoid of a window and a few pieces of carpet nailed to the door frame was all it took to lightproof the already blacked out bedroom.
What I didn’t take into account, however, was my irrational fear of the dark. Combine that with a nearly bionic sense of hearing and suddenly the time spent alone in that room, listening to every squeak and rustle, was like sitting through a Freddy Krueger movie. And now, after 20 years the results of those hasty, frenzied hours spent hyperventilating in a room full of chemicals is evidenced by the fading photos hanging on walls, testament to the fact that fear and patience just don’t mix.
Thank goodness for the advent of digital cameras.
