I woke to the shrill screech of the smoke alarms. We had a fire. I woke my husband and called my son who was fire chief of our small town fire department.
Within minutes, all the local boys arrived. Thanks to their dedication and caring, they put the fire out with minimal damage.
Within two hours, most of the family were here. Ready to help with repairs, we began working that very day. That evening, we had a “happy fire” party for all the friends and neighbors dropped in to help out,
Our house has always been full of people, laughter, and food. The grandkids say, “ you can’t go to Granny’s without eating something.” They have card parties, fish fries, wiener roasts, and Sunday meals here. They are growing up and have added some great grandkids laughter to the House.
After the fire, strange things began to happen. Our hot water heater would go off, come back on, then off again. We thought there was a short, but couldn’t find one.
A grandson, Cody, and I were sitting at the table and a plate came flying off the wall and crashed to the floor.
Later, another grandson, Seth, walked in and said, “Granny, is that music I hear?”
“It sounds like a violin,” I said. We walked into my office where a small violin sits on a shelf. When you touch the bow to it, it plays. Nothing was touching the string, but it played.
Seth said, “ Does that scare you?”
“ No.” My husband and I joked for years that we had a ghost in the house, but we didn’t take the things that went bump in the night too seriously.
But that week, an overnight guest refused to sleep in the room with the violin. It wasn’t still playing, I took the battery out.
If there is a ghost in our home, it has never harmed anyone. The fire may have riled it up a bit, but if can tolerate the laughter, the fighting, and my banging the pots and pans, then it is welcome.
Besides, instead of a ghost, it may actually be our guardian angel.
