I first met Larry in 1989 when I was a waitress catering to a hometown group of regulars. He'd arrive every morning at 8:15, order coffee and two eggs sunny side. His age was much debated amongst my coworkers - was he 45? 55? 65? No one could tell but based on appearances we all assumed the 60's had been really good to him.

The day Larry stopped keeping his clockwork schedule was a day fraught with concern. Where had he gone?

A few weeks later, Larry sat down at his regular table and ordered coffee and two eggs sunny side. When I asked where he'd been he told me he'd sold everything he owned and bought a ticket to Germany to see Pink Floyd play a concert on the former site of the Berlin Wall. Turns out, he'd been alive when the wall was built, and Pink Floyd had been instrumental in shaping how the 60's and 70's had treated him. Two weeks before, in July 1990, Larry had left with nothing but a desire to be a part of history, and he'd come back with nothing but a memory.

As far as everyone was concerned, "Larry" was crazy. As far as I was concerned, he was a legend.
