For those who have already been to Milan many times, and are looking for nearby and perhaps not well-known places to spend a day waiting to catch a flight or a plane. The first thing is to find a secure luggage storage in Milan. Taking trips outside Milan with the effort of carrying luggage is not comfortable.
If you have already visited the Duomo of Milan several times, if you are tired of going to the Navigli, or do not feel like taking a walk along Via Montenapoleone, I recommend a visit to Mergozzo, not far from Milan.
Mergozzo is a small village overlooking the lake of the same name, which was once part of the great Lake Maggiore. We are in Piedmont, more precisely in the Ossola Valley in the Lepontine Alps. As I said, Lake Mergozzo did not exist in antiquity, because it represented the westernmost part of the left branch of Lake Maggiore, until frequent floods and floods created a natural divider between the two basins.
Now Lake Mergozzo is one of the cleanest in Italy, thanks to the absence of motor boats and factories nearby. Milan is not far away, but I always recommend booking a luggage storage in Italy before leaving.
The small town of Mergozzo is made up of narrow streets and stone houses that offer photogenic views, thanks also to the care of the inhabitants who preserve their ancient charm.
In the heart of the ancient village we find the church of the Beata Vergine Assunta and its beautiful portico in which the via crucis is represented in the form of frescoes.
But the real symbol of Mergozzo is the old elm, positioned in the center of the main square for more than 400 years. It is here, in the shade of its branches with the sounds of the lake in the background, that the most important decisions for the community were once made. Who knows how many stories that old elm has heard in his long life!
For trekking lovers, starting from the center of Mergozzo and following the brown signs, it is possible to take the "Sentiero Azzurro di Mergozzo", which leads to the very suggestive viewpoint of Montorfano. The route is easy, it is 3km one way with a difference in height of 150m (about an hour's drive excluding stops).
To reach Mergozzo from Milan it takes about an hour. A perfect destination to spend a day outdoors and stop for lunch in a restaurant to taste Piedmontese specialties. Do not forget to taste the typical sweet of Mergozzo, the fugascina, a kind of sweet focaccia prepared by the town baker.
