The week of the World Ecological Strike has recently passed. Those who were able to join the global protest movement came out onto the streets to demand from the authorities to take measures in combating the climate crisis. An important outcome of this week is that millions of people have learned more about the planet's environmental problems and have drawn attention to them.
For all those who care about our planet, we have compiled a list of steps that each of us can take to help combat climate changes:
1. Recognize the Problem
The most absurd thing in the situation with the climate crisis is that many people still deny this problem, considering it a myth, a secret conspiracy, the hysteria of environmentalists or a natural process. To notice how serious climate changes have become, a person needs to look beyond the boundaries of their yard or city and think on a planetary scale.
What can you do? At a minimum, do not limit yourself to superficial news about disputes at the UN or activist protests. Find out what global warming and climate change is, how it affects our lives now and the changes it will bring in the near future. Study the arguments and opinions of scientists, not the speeches of politicians. To verify this, you only need to spend a little time searching for information about it on the Internet.
2. Make Feasible Changes in Your Lifestyle
Climate change is a huge problem but each of us can do something to influence it. To reduce the consumption of plastic, you can use a reusable bottle for water, make a permanent cup for coffee (many coffee houses will respond to a customer’s request to pour a drink in your own cup), and bring your own bag to the grocery store. Special efforts are not necessary and small changes enough to show consciousness.
Another feasible change is to control electricity consumption. Use energy-saving light bulbs and do not turn on unnecessary electrical appliances. These are just a few good habits that can make environmentally-friendly changes in your life without serious sacrifices and efforts.
3. Change Your Shopping Habits
The human impact on the environment is so large that you may not even notice how you support this system of endless and unconscious consumption. Try to think not only about what you eat or where you leave the trash but also pay attention to your shopping habits. Learn how to dress environmentally and give preference to local producers since transporting goods over long distances is very harmful to the environment. Try to travel by train and not by plane as it not as harmful to the planet.
4. Eat Less Meat
In August, UN experts said that a vegetarian diet can help people fight climate change. Plant production has a lesser impact on the climate than livestock production. Scientists do not urge us to completely abandon meat but only to reduce its consumption, which remains very high in developed countries. Vegetables in the diet are more beneficial not only for the climate but also for our health. It will help you with weight loss, and fight depression and anxiety.
5. Express Your Opinion Publicly
Even if you can’t participate in the events that are taking place today, it is possible to support the climate movement in the future, join future pickets or organize your own. The more people show that they are not indifferent to the fate of the planet on which we live, the more likely politicians will move from empty talks to active action.
