With the right decoration hung on the wall, any living space can be transformed from plain and boring to unique and personal.

Think about your personal style and how this translates to your decor, and what feel or atmosphere you want the space to evoke. If you look at your art and feel a certain way, the chances are that this atmosphere will be mirrored throughout the room so consider its textures and strokes of paint carefully.

Every room needs a focal point, and a piece of inspiring art is a perfect way to do that. In the living room, it is perfect hung over a fireplace or your sofa across the main wall in the room. In the bedroom, hang it above the bed or proudly place it on top of your dresser. In the dining room it can add an accent to a somewhat empty space. Think of your carefully selected art piece as a talking point or something that will sit pride of place in the space you create.

Size is also important — if you hang up a piece of wall art that’s too small, you’ll know it instantly, and the same usually goes for pieces that are too large. Wall art should fill a space adequately and not leave the wall wanting for more adornment. If your wall art is too small, consider grouping it together with multiple pieces that create a unifying collage or composition.

A beautiful piece of wall art that is carefully chosen and considered will no doubt include colors and tones that you find attractive. Art can be used as a great device to inspire a base color scheme and to add accents from there. When looking at your piece of art, pick out a few shades that really stick out. 

From these, choose a main color then have two or three as accent colors for the room and work with these in your selection of accessories. Sometimes it’s more tasteful to leave a wall bare or to show restraint on walls that you are decorating. The trick here is to start small and scale up. Place your wall art and decorations wherever you feel like it is needed the most, and expand from there. If you’ve created a satisfying, fulfilling space without filling all your walls up, then you should probably trust your gut — don’t fill in the negative space unless you can just tell it’s missing a certain something.

There is such a thing as your walls being too cluttered, and you should consider how negative space can sometimes be a good thing — that is, space that’s not filled with any kind of decoration.

While it’s easy to see why one wouldn’t want this to be the only design language in their home, it would be equally as weird to have a bunch of other decorations that don’t flow with each other.

One good way to experiment with your walls is to not hang or mount every single decoration. Some pieces can look good by leaning against the wall resting on the floor (such as a large mirror), or by resting on a shelf or drawer unit, such as one of our smaller wall art pieces.

Even if you’re not a pro interior designer, you most likely have at least some kind of intuition that lets you identify when something just doesn’t look right. Try learning some of your wall art! If it feels wrong, trust your instinct. If it feels right, great!

Forget about balance. Be sure to consider the style and color palette of your furniture -- what tones would you like the wall décor to highlight? If your furniture is primarily neutral, consider adding a pop of color to your walls. Similarly, opt for more understated wall décor if your furniture is patterned.
