There’s something special about coming home to a place where you’re surrounded by people who understand, support, and encourage you. For many people living with disabilities, shared living isn’t just a housing option—it’s a community, a support system, and a space where independence can truly flourish. At Moriah Care, we believe shared living is more than just sharing a roof; it’s about sharing life.
What Is Shared Living?
Shared living, sometimes called supported independent living, involves two or more people with disabilities living together in a home environment, with tailored support provided to meet each person’s individual needs. It’s an NDIS-funded service that allows participants to access daily living assistance, while still maintaining control and choice over their routines, lifestyle, and goals.
At Moriah Care, our approach to shared living is centred around people. We take time to match individuals not just by needs, but by personalities, routines, and values—because compatibility matters.
More Than Just a House
One of the biggest misconceptions about shared living is that it’s just about saving costs or pooling resources. But in reality, it’s about creating an environment where people can grow—socially, emotionally, and practically.
Think about the comfort of waking up and knowing there’s someone there to share a morning coffee with. Or the joy of celebrating birthdays, holidays, or even simple weekend movie nights with housemates who feel more like family. Shared living offers emotional security and companionship, often reducing loneliness and improving mental wellbeing.
Fostering Independence with the Right Support
At Moriah Care, we ensure our shared living homes balance support and freedom. Our trained support workers assist with daily tasks like meal preparation, cleaning, personal care, and medication—but we also encourage residents to learn and take part in these activities. Over time, many of our residents gain the skills and confidence to become more independent, which is incredibly empowering.
Residents also participate in decision-making about household rules, rosters, and recreational activities. It’s their home, after all, and they deserve to have their voices heard.
A True Sense of Belonging
For many individuals, especially those who may have experienced social isolation, shared living brings the priceless feeling of belonging. The friendships formed in a shared living home can be life-changing. Whether it's helping each other cook a meal, playing games in the living room, or just having someone to talk to after a long day—these small, daily interactions add up to something meaningful.
Shared Living with Moriah Care
What makes shared living at Moriah Care stand out is our focus on respect, inclusion, and choice. We understand that no two people are the same, and neither are their support needs. Our homes are welcoming, safe, and adapted to support a variety of physical and cognitive needs.
We work with participants, families, and support coordinators to ensure a smooth transition into shared living. From the first meeting to the first move-in day, we’re right there, offering guidance, reassurance, and support.
