Whether you are moving to a new location or the near-summer warmth is inspiring you to clean up your home, decluttering is something that helps every home stay clean, safe, and cozy. Decluttering is more than just a deep cleaning weekend, though that is equally as important with the weather pushing the sun through our windows. If decluttering isn’t something you’ve done often, follow these few steps to ensure you keep a clean apartment all year round.
Schedule a day to declutter your apartment. For the majority of us, this is going to be on a weekend, simply because that’s when we usually get a break. Choose a day to declutter, get the garbage bags and boxes ready, and you can even rent a large trash bin to ensure you get rid of everything you’d like to see go. This sort of rental makes planning a day even easier because you’ll need to schedule these bins coming and going from your home. Once you’ve decided on the day, you can make a plan for decluttering.
On decluttering day, even with planning and a rental trash bin, it is still very easy to become overwhelmed. To make things less stressful, simply start with what you can see. Start with one room, such as the living room or garage, and allow yourself to take baby steps and gather momentum. Even as you take your decluttering day one step at a time, you’ll see that the pace quickens as you notice things you’ve never noticed before.
Whether you are going from room to room or clearing out whatever you see, make sure to use the “use it, love it, or lose it” method. Have you used this item in the past 12 months? Are you saving it for something that will never come? Has the item been buried for so long you’ve even forgotten it existed? If you are using something or missing it being in the right place, it is unlikely that you’ll actually need it. To stay organized, create piles, bags or boxes with three categories: keep it, toss it, or donate it.
Whether you live in luxurious 2 bedroom apartments in Albuquerque or a small studio, you can keep a clean and organized home. Plan a decluttering day and take what you’ve learned on that day into the rest of the year. Invest in multipurpose funeral, place a waste basket in every room to keep trash living your home, and don’t bring in new items that you don’t need.
