Audi, in line with other German carmakers, has set a bold goal to transition its entire vehicle lineup to electric by 2033. With a strong push into the electric car revolution, Audi has already made significant strides with models like the recently facelifted e-tron SUV, the Porsche Taycan-based e-tron GT, and the compact SUVs like the Q4 e-tron. However, Audi is not stopping there, and it has a grand plan to unveil at least ten new electric models in the coming years. One of the most anticipated upcoming electric models from Audi is the 2025 Audi A6 e-tron, the company's first-ever electric sedan. Expected to be unveiled by the end of 2023 or early 2024, the A6 e-tron will share its underpinnings with other electric Audis and will be a crucial part of the brand's extensive EV family. The vehicle will be based on the versatile Premium Platform Electric (PPE) developed jointly with Porsche.
The PPE architecture is a game-changer, serving as a highly flexible 800-volt EV platform for various Audi and Porsche models. This modular platform will underpin not only the A6 e-tron but also other compact, large, and full-size electric Audis in the future. The scalability of the PPE architecture enables Audi to incorporate luxury features even in their entry-level models without compromising on quality.
The A6 e-tron concept, which was showcased at the 2021 Auto Shanghai motor show, hinted at Audi's future design language. The production version of the A6 e-tron, set to be unveiled in late 2023 or early 2024, will feature a significantly redesigned exterior. Departing from the traditional A6 design language, the A6 e-tron will sport a liftback design at the rear, akin to the electric version of an A7. The front will feature Audi's signature enlarged Singleframe grille, which will be closed off for every car built on the PPE architecture. The sleek proportions and low-slung roofline showcased in the concept car will make way for more interior space to ensure passenger comfort and ample luggage capacity.
Inside, the A6 e-tron is expected to take a more minimalistic approach compared to the sea of touchscreens typically found in modern German cars. This shift towards a cleaner, uncluttered interior will likely offer a refreshing driving experience for passengers.
The A6 e-tron will be available in single-motor, rear-wheel-drive, and dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions. With the largest battery option and rear-wheel drive, the A6 e-tron is projected to achieve a range of over 435 miles (700 kilometers) based on the WLTP standard. Equipped with an 800-volt electrical architecture, the A6 e-tron can handle ultra-fast DC charging up to 270kW. Audi claims that the battery pack in the A6 e-tron concept can charge from 5 to 80 percent capacity in just 25 minutes using the fastest DC rapid charger available, offering unmatched convenience for electric vehicle owners.
As for performance, the A6 e-tron is no slouch. The more powerful versions of the A6 e-tron family are expected to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 kph) in less than four seconds. Audi is also said to be working on S6 and RS6 e-tron versions, with the latter potentially featuring a tri-motor setup, delivering over 800 horsepower and impressive torque vectoring capabilities.
