Do you like to get out of the city in the summer? Barbecuing, fishing and sunbathing are the most common types of outdoor activities, but they are not the only ones. Quiet bonfire nights and healthy sleep in a tent are an excellent vacation from the city’s busy schedule. If you don’t have a backpack full of necessary things for your trip, read our seven tips that will help you spend the night in a tent with comfort.
1. Check the tent equipment
Before you go camping, check if all the pegs and ropes are in place. Layout the tent at home to make sure that you have all the necessary parts to install it. The tent usually consists of a waterproof upper part and an inner lightweight part. The inner section usually has a mosquito net and a waterproof bottom. Check that the zippers work in your tent. Not only the cold, but all kinds of small creatures can creep up to you with the advent of darkness.
2. Learn to pitch the tent
It is very important to pitch a tent properly! A crooked tent will not only confuse perfectionists with its appearance but can also leak in the rain or fly away in the wind. Don’t improvise and read the instructions before starting. Remember that the tent should be pitched on a flat surface without any pits and bumps. Assemble the tent, tie all the ropes, stick the pegs in the ground, and close all the doors. If it looks like a real house, then you can safely spend the night in it.
3. Buy a mattress
Although the tent is equipped with a waterproof bottom, it still transfers the cold. And if you don’t want to freeze your bottom, then get a sleeping bag or an inflatable mattress. A dense high-quality sleeping bag will save you from cold and moisture, but sleeping on it is pretty hard. Put two narrow foam rugs with an overlap so that the cold doesn’t get into the gap between them. An inflatable mat or mattress is softer than foam. It's very comfortable to sleep in such a bed, but it costs five times as much.
4. Prepare a sleeping bag and blanket
If you think that a simple blanket will save you from the cold night, you are very mistaken. It is very cold outdoors, especially in the morning. Therefore, a sheet or blanket is only suitable if you have a heated tent. The best solution is a sleeping bag. Choose it carefully and pay particular attention to the comfort temperature that is indicated on it. This is the temperature at which you will not freeze in a sleeping bag.
5. Don’t forget the pillow
Another important thing that can help prevent neck pain is a pillow. You shouldn't take a large pillow from home. It’s best to get an inflatable pillow made for camping. They are sold not only in tourist shops but also in supermarkets. Don't try to replace a comfortable pillow with clothes or something else. You may get unpleasant sensations in the spine.
6. Get insect protection
Mosquitoes, bugs, woodlice, and spiders aren’t the most pleasant neighbors. Close the doors tightly to prevent insects from entering the tent. If they have already crawled inside, then you can hang bunches of tansy in a tent. But not the fact that you will find it.
It is possible to smoke special spirals, but they don't smell very nice. You won't want to sleep in such a space not only because of insects but also due to the smoke. The best way is to use a portable bug repellent. It works all night, doesn’t smell and makes no noise. But its cost is higher than the spirals.
7. Take a heating pad with you
The heater will not take up much space, but you will be very pleased with it on a cold night. A good option is a salt heater. It will warm you for a long time and it is safe to use. If the cold caught you by surprise and you don’t have a special heating pad, you can take a regular plastic bottle with hot water and put it in the sleeping bag.
