One of the Super stainless steels designed for improved resistance to acid attack is Alloy 20 Fasteners. Its overall resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and general pitting attack is attributed to the presence of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper in the material. It hardly ever experiences chloride stress corrosion cracking. Columbium is used to stabilize Alloy 20 Fasteners to reduce carbide precipitation during welding.
It can be made relatively easily and has excellent mechanical qualities. Although the alloy was created for use in industries related to sulfuric acid, it is widely used in the chemical industry worldwide. Pharmaceuticals, food, gasoline, solvents, plastics, explosives, synthetic fibers, and many other goods are processed using it as well.
In boiling 20 to 40% sulfuric acid, it has a well-known enhanced resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. It also resists sulfuric acid corrosion very well overall. It also exhibits great resistance to cracking caused by chloride stress corrosion. In general, this makes alloy 20 an ideal fastener alloy for use in harsh settings including SO 2 scrubbers, the food and dye business, and the chemical sector

Key Features of Alloy 20 Fasteners
- Good protection against sulfuric acid at 20% to 40%
- Resistance to pitting, cracking, and crevice corrosion under moderate stress in chloride
- Reasonable overall protection against rust
- Good resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded state
Features of Alloy 20 Fasteners
Fasteners made of alloy 20 work well in hot sulfuric acid, particularly when the sulfuric acid is boiling and has a specific concentration range of 20% to 40%. They also perform well in general sulfuric acid resistance. Although Alloy 20 (2.4660) fasteners perform better than Duplex or even Monel and offer solid acid protection, you might need to look at Inconel or Hastelloy fasteners for high-temperature and high-concentration acids. Additionally, fasteners made of alloy 20 exhibit useful resistance to nitric and phosphoric acids.
