The austenitic stainless steel that is part of the T-300 family and contains at least 18% chromium and 8% nickel is known as alloy 304L. The highest allowable amount of carbon in type 304L stainless steel is 0.030. This is the typical "18/8 stainless," which can be found in a lot of different pots and plates. One of the stainless steel family's metals that is known for its versatility and widespread application is 304L.
The chemical makeup of these two alloys is astonishingly identical; however, there is one significant distinction between the two. In stainless steel of grade 304, the maximum amount of carbon allowed is 0.08%, but in stainless steel of grade 304L, the maximum amount of carbon allowed is only 0.03%. Because of this, the letter "L" in "304L" can be read to mean "extra-low carbon."
For instance, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 304L stainless steel is approximately 85 ksi (586 MPa), which is significantly less than the UTS of conventional grade 304 stainless, which is 90 ksi (620 MPa). The 0.2% yield strength of 304 SS is 42 ksi (about 289 MPa), whereas the 0.2% yield strength of 304L is 35 ksi (about 241 MPa).
This means that if you have two wire baskets made of steel and both baskets have the same design, wire thickness, and construction, the basket made from 304L will be structurally weaker than the basket made from conventional 304.
Stainless steel 304, on the other hand, has the same density as stainless steel 304L.
