What is a Gate Valve?

A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, knife valve or slide valve, is an in-line valve (which allows fluid to pass through).  Most often considered as on/off valves, gate valves have been around for decades. 

On/off valves either allow flow (on) or obstruct it completely (off). These valves are also known as isolation valves, because they can effectively shut down flow into a segment of a system, often for maintenance to be performed. 

A gate valve is a linear motion valve with a rectangular or circular disc called a “gate”. It can be opened or closed by moving a metal gate up and down. When raised, the gate clears the channel and allows flow; when lowered, the gate obstructs the channel.

A Bellow Sealed Valve, also known as ‘Zero-Leak Valve’ or ‘Emission Free Valve’ is a specifically engineered industrial valve designed in response to the necessity for a completely different way to provide the needed sealing for use in sectors that deal with toxic media, where even minor leaks can be disastrous. 

In these valves, conventional gland packing is appended/supplemented by a metallic Bellow Cartridge joined to the valve bonnet at one end and the stem at the other end. A bellow is a long accordion-like metal tube. The bellow cartridge has a number of convolutions and these convolutions become compressed or expanded depending upon the movement of the valve stem. Scientifically speaking, the bellow gets compressed when the valve is in the open position and expanded when the valve is in the closed condition. There are no sliding or rotating seals through which process fluid can pass. The fluid will enter the valve from the seat of the valve & come in contact with the bellow, but will not come in contact with the stem.
