What is a Butterfly Valve?
A butterfly valve is a part of the quarter-turn rotary motion valve family (bi-directional) that is used to prevent, control, or start flow.
Quarter valves include the type of valves in which 1/4 turn of the disk is enough to fully open or fully close the flow. Quarter turn valves are fast to operate as they only require 90 degrees of rotation in order to move from the fully open to the fully closed position. This is also why they are also called fast-acting valves.
The butterfly valve gets its name from the shape of the plug and how it moves.
The plug is disc-shaped with a rod passing through it which makes it look like a butterfly. When the rod is turned, it rotates the disc by a quarter such that the disc falls perpendicular to the flow and stops it. And to restore the flow, the rod rotates the disc back to the original position, i.e. away from the flow. The valve can also be opened in stages to control the flow.
Advantages of Butterfly Valve:
- Design is small & requires little room.
- Piping system easily supports the weight.
- Costs less because there is less raw material.
- Quick operation; little time spent opening or closing.
- Low operation torque allows for simple operation.
- Larger sizes are available.
- Energy efficiency has improved.
- A high-pressure rebound follows the low-pressure decrease.
- Durable
- Maintenance is easier, inexpensive and less required.
- Less assistance is required.
- Quite accurate.
- Can be installed/removed easily without disrupting the piping system
- Numerous actuation methods are available.
- Various seat and disc materials are available.
- Low-pressure drop.
- Good for slurries
- Large seating area
- No gas pockets
- Good for on/off and throttling
- Eay to install and operate
- Lightweight
Disadvantages of Butterfly Valve:
- Due to low-pressure drop, throttling is limited.
- Even in an open state, the valve disc is constantly under pressure and might interrupt the flow.
- Cavitation and choked flow are possible.
- Poor sealing.
- High differential pressure is not recommended.
- Regardless of the setting, a pressure switch occurs over the valve.
- Disc provides little resistance to flow when fully open.
- Flow turbulence affects disc movement, which is unguided.

Types of Butterfly Valves:
The American Water Works Association is abbreviated as AWWA. A butterfly valve controls the flow of the medium by allowing and stopping fluid flow. In this type of valve, a disc is attached to the rod. Because of this disc, fluid can travel through the valve.
SVR Global is an AWWA butterfly valves manufacturer in USA offering different butterfly valve structures as below
- AWWA Wafer Butterfly valve
- AWWA Lug Butterfly valve
- AWWA Flanged Butterfly valve
AWWA Butterfly valves can be modified and come in three different configurations: lever-operated, hand-wheel operated, and gear operated. Depending on your needs, these valves can be equipped with either an electric or pneumatic actuator.
Based on Valve Geometry-
A centric or concentric butterfly valve is the most common type of butterfly valve arrangement.
The stem is in the center of the disc and the disc is in the center of the valve body. The disc stays in the passage, but it provides very little resistance to the flow due to its thinness. When the seat opens or shuts, some portions of the disc are always in touch with or scraping the seat. The seat is subjected to friction every time the valve is utilized as a result of this arrangement.
Concentric butterfly valves are also known as resilient seated butterfly valve as it depends on the flexibility of the seat rubber when the flow is closed, for the reliability of the seal.
Single Offset Butterfly Valve
The shaft is offset from its body center line.
The double eccentric offset butterfly valve is also known as the high-performance butterfly valve or double eccentric butterfly valve.
The shaft is offset both from its body center line as well as the pipe’s center line.
This valve is suitable for thicker media with high pressure due to its design which prevents excessive contact between the disc and the seat. The valve’s balance is controlled by the stem, which is placed behind the circular disc. It allows the disc to self-adjust to the center, ensuring a solid fit. Even when fully opened, the valve does not touch the soft seat, ensuring a longer service life.
Triple offset butterfly valves are another name for triple eccentric butterfly valves.
The shaft is offset from its body center line as well as the pipe’s center line like the double offset butterfly valve. In addition, there is a conical offset shape in its seal & disc connection.
Thermal shocks and pressure peaks are reduced because of the metal sealing, and the design allows for low torque operation. The composite stainless steel sealing ring on the disc of our triple eccentric butterfly valve ensures that there is no leakage. The unique triple eccentric method achieves right-angled rotation with minimal friction. This approach makes the triple eccentric butterfly valve more resistant to high temperature, high pressure, and corrosion than standard butterfly valves. The metal hard seal begins more easily because of the triple eccentric’s unique shape. There is no friction between the disc and the valve body throughout the rotation process when the valve is opened and closed. A zero-friction right-angled rotation was possible thanks to the triple eccentric arrangement. High-frequency opening and shutting applications, as well as harsh applications, call for these valves.
Based on Valve Geometry-
The butterfly valve body construction varies in the ways they are joined:
- Double flanged valve: two bored flanges ensure a free connection of the flanged pipes by bolts.
- Wafer-style valve: four centering through-holes allow to use the same bolts for both pipes;
- Lug-style valve: multiple threaded centering bores secure the valve with several bolts and no nuts;
- Butt-welding Ends: both ends of the valve body are welding-ready to be joined to the pipes.
