The Backrooms is a creepypasta and urban legend that describes an unending maze of randomly produced office rooms and other settings.
The Backrooms is one of my favorite internet phenomena. It is a collection of blogs, short videos, and creepypasta stories that describe a spooky transitional region between worlds that is haunted by ghouls inspired by Lovecraft. Backrooms has released a new survival horror game called Itch, which was influenced by games like Slenderman and SCP.
The Backrooms is a found-footage style psychological horror game that was released in 1998. The game challenges the player to navigate the eponymous sub-reality by discovering clues, using spray paint to mark your path, and, of course, evading the various New Weird creatures that are trying to track them down. For an indie effort, the quality of the images is really great, and the voice acting is above average. According to the description of the game, "Things that you may see in the shadows are occasionally not shadows." "Something or someone could be hiding in there with you at any moment. Be careful not to waste your stamina, and only use it when it's really necessary. As if I required further convincing...
The grainy VHS and stark lens-flare lighting effects of the very best found-footage movies were captured in The Backrooms in 1998, when the game was developed by Steelkrill Studio, a one-person developer selling the game for whatever price you choose to pay. The game is incredibly professional-looking. You are followed by ghosts, mannequins, and shadow creatures that are so fleeting that you can easily miss them if you don't keep your eyes peeled for them.
The version that is now available is merely a teaser, but if you are someone who enjoys good horror, and especially if you are seeking for something to do as we get closer to Halloween, The Backrooms in 1998 is something that you absolutely should not miss. Just keep in mind that you need to bring the spray paint. The Backrooms are alive, and they will do all in their power to keep you locked inside.
Be sure to check out some of the other excellent Halloween games as the month of October draws closer. You could also want to try some of the finest indie games on PC, or if you're more courageous than I am, some of the best VR horror games that are now available. Both of these options are available right now.
