Throughout my college years I was a dedicated procrastinator—chronic, some would say. I’d be grinning on the inside every time a fellow student told me about how hard he/she worked. For me, research was started the night before the essay was due, and the occasional late night of caffeine-rich anxiety was part of the routine. Those nights weren’t fun, admittedly, but they gave such freedom! I could go six days in a week without a care in the world, and I gloried in my indolence.
That lifestyle was fantastic, for a time. It didn’t hurt my grades, and probably suited my lackadaisical, head-in-the-clouds nature. Though it felt like a friend, procrastination was a no-good scamp. In retrospect, the words “where would I have been” often cross my mind. Thankfully, wasting time has a latent ability to kick you in the butt. At least for now, I’m enjoying the spur.
