LED grow lights are onto the scene lighting up indoor gardens at a rate that is equal to or even outpacing HPS (high-pressure sodium) bulbs. LEDs, as their name suggests, are lighted by the latest generation of halogen light technology. When it comes to growing indoors, LED light technology has been blazing on the lead. Whether it has not overtaken traditional grow lights yet, it certainly will soon. LEDs have become the technology of the twenty-first century and they come with a host of big benefits over their competition. Let us take a closer look at some of those benefits and how they impact the average grower.
Lifespan
The biggest benefit of led grow lights compared to traditional lighting systems is their lifespan. LEDs put up such low levels of heat, typically only a few hundredths of a watt, that their lifespan is equivalent to almost two thousand hours - nearly half a year on average. This is a big advantage when it comes to cost-per-grow, as you are cutting down on power usage, which is always a good thing, no matter what type of gardening you are doing. However, LED lights put up this level of light without draining their batteries like all the traditional grow light units do. As a result, they tend to run much longer than other bulbs.
Operating Temperature
Another benefit of using LED grow lights versus other types is that they don't run into problems with their operating temperatures. You will find that they use less energy at all, since the energy is not being spent on cooling off any excess heat that the bulbs produce. They also don't run at temperatures higher than fifty degrees above room temperature, meaning that you can even leave them out as far as fifteen or sixteen degrees below room temperature without having to worry about burning your skin. Hid lighting systems use temperatures anywhere between ninety and one hundred degrees above room temperature, so you have to really watch the temperatures if you plan on keeping them indoors most of the time. With an LED grow light, you never have to worry about extreme temperatures.
Zero Heat
Another key benefit of LED grow lights over other types is that they create zero heat. You may have heard that they produce a lot of heat, but that's a complete misconception. A LED fixture is not generating any light whatsoever; it is only trying to soak up as much energy as possible. As long as the light itself stays within the temperature range that it needs to stay, there is absolutely no reason why it won't stay bright. In fact, you should be able to use these lights twenty-four hours a day without worrying about having to flip them off and on again. Traditional lighting systems are typically only used during the evening or at night, and even then, some level of light pollution is created because of older fluorescent bulbs.
Efficiency
One thing that you will always need to consider when comparing LED grow lights to others is the efficiency of the light itself. An LED light will typically be more efficient than a standard incandescent light because it utilizes less energy in order to provide the same intensity of light. The extra energy that is used comes primarily from the heat that is produced by the device. While the heat may make the light cooler than traditional lights, it also helps to ensure that the plants will be healthier, allowing them to produce more and healthier flowers and leaves.
