Over the last several weeks i have become more passionate about trying to get people to drop their phones and engage in the world around us.
This past Sunday i walked into several businesses to observe, and to no surprise my findings were as i thought. I saw groups of people "hanging" out with each other, but they really were not. About 90% of the people in the Starbucks' that i visited were on their cell phones. They were not engaging the person that was right in front of them, and this pains me to see that the world has become so addicted to this little device. A device that i believe will be our demise one day.
Recently i heard a speaker tell us that the youth of today are reporting to be more lonely then seniors in a seniors home. WOW! that is mind boggling.
I remember when i was growing up i was never lonely. I was always hanging out with friends, and i was enjoying their company with laughter, joy and fun. Now i look again at the world and i can see it. A screen has become the youth's best friend, and it affects their minds and their growth. They are poisoning themselves and the damage that it is causing is permanent. At a time parents could have stopped this by limiting the amount of time kids were on technology, but now it has gotten so bad that it can be harmful to take that phone away.
It has to be a self-choice now, as it was for me. It wasn't easy, and it's only been a couple of weeks. I can't image it will get easier for awhile, but i want to be a bigger part of my friends' lives. I don't want a screen to be my best friend, and i don't want my friends to think that my phone is more important than them. For the time being i now leave my phone at home when i go out. I leave my phone in the bottom drawer while i am at work, and i want to continue to spread this to others, and get them to realize how bad this is for us all.
