It seems that ever since the initial primitive stages of humanity, we as a species have always yearned to leave a signature mark of some sort on this world. Every human has always longed to find true value in a life worth living, to some extent. Every human being longs to have some form of purpose in this life. It would appear that history is full of various dramatic episodes that exemplify humanity's thirst to be remembered. Often we as humans have gone to such extremities such a violence and war, all with hopes that the fruits of our conquest will lead us down a path into legend hood.
It is the natural will of the human, I believe to want to feel belonged to something bigger than them. This paradigm helps explain why so many people have always seemed to be forever in a frantic sate of hysteria, simply trying to be someone worth remembering. I can't help but question, however, if the various methods that we as a collective race have utilized historically to gain some type of notoriety, have been at the misguided expense of other people. It seems that we have collectively shared this ethic that encourages one individual to ride waves of bliss over the blatant dominance that they perceive that they have over another who is deemed weaker or less important. This is not true empowerment. This is not the nature, I believe of our authentic primal inclinations.
We currently face a bold new era in human history, one that offers the promise of dramatic change and transformation. This is a time of reckoning and atonement. We all must face up to what we have allowed to happen to ourselves, to our communities, to greater society and to our ecological environment. It is painfully obvious that the old ways of thinking and these outdated notions of power through conquest, will only continue to breed more violence and resentment from the masses. Humanity is long over due for something new, something completely different.
I used to subscribe to this narrative of power over force. But as I continued to experience various aspects of life on my own personal journey as I matured, I couldn't help but find that true power does not come from making others feel down. Rather, true power, I believe, is an inherent birth right that we all posses as human beings. We just are not regularly encouraged to live from our authentic power, for doing so would require us to cleanse our minds of all the things we thought we couldn't do. I have come to find out that anything is possible. It is in our nature as human beings, to be able to create and innovate freely. This, in my opinion has always been one of our greatest strengths; simply being able to create something for the sake of creation. Ironically enough, throughout history it was quite common for major empires to denounce art and creative works of any kind. Many governments seemed to feel severely threatened by such creativity, showing no mercy to those who still persisted to create, sentencing them to death.
Perhaps it is time to transcend this silly fear. Holding onto this fear of creation, could easily explain why humanity has been so quick and eager to destroy what ever they deem important to. The earth cannot stand anymore destruction and decay. We owe it to ourselves to reignite the flames of creativity in all of us, so that we can find the will to be a resilient race who is capable of living in total harmony with the planet. For me, I see poetry as a bridge to where we could be. I have always struggled making since out of this world, but creating lyrics, whether it be for a song, a rap or a poem, allow me to build something in this world that my soul choses to embody. I become my art, my poems and songs. Through these periods of epic transformation, my past worries dissipate. Everything that I thought I knew, goes out the window, as I am left with nothing but the very intricacies of my work. It allows me to focus. It allows me to connect.
Speaking of connection, nothing makes me feel more connected than when I find myself amongst the people performing in the streets like I tend to do once a week. Sure, at first when I venture to a given space on the street to begin a sporadic song, I feel judged, I feel foolish. All of these feelings of resentment simply vanish upon the immediate sound of the first strike of my djembe drum. I allow my hands to pitter patter back in forth on the rough hide of my drum. My thoughts leave me as I try to get lost in the rhythms that arise from my striking. Suddenly, the hoards of judgmental people transform into people memorized by such an exotic gesture. They respond to my energy, where sound is one of the most primal expressions of energy, therefore when I play my drum, my energy is being manifested via that particular form of sound. In this moment, I have created something much bigger than myself, and I allow the vibrations to touch who ever is in need of them. I can't help but note that our ancient ancestors created many a things with rhythm. Rhythm is the cornerstone of creation. Everything has a certain rhythm to it. I encourage everyone to get in tune with their own rhythm. We all posses sparks of magic in us, capable of transforming any situation. It's all how we look at it.
Do what feeds your soul. Do those things that everyone around you said were impossible. Dare to be your self fully and authentically. May you unapologetically thrive in this life as yourself! Do not fear creation. Do no fear the organic power of your thoughts, words and actions. I have learned thus far in my young life, that the only things that block us from emerging as fully sovereign and liberated persons, are none other than our own personal doubts of ourselves! Those voices in our heads that nag us and constantly drag us down, are illusions! You are enough the way you are. So you want to leave a legacy on this planet? Simply don't be afraid to be you! May we all lead lives full of prosperity, love, peace and balance. May we understand that compassion and empathy are what this planet needs right now more than anything. We owe it to ourselves to live full, happy, healthy and loving lives! 💚✌🏾
