I made it to the timeclock with 2 minutes to spare while juggling my coffee and the DVD’s to return. We open at 9 a.m. I quickly take one last sip then sign on to the computer. The lights come on, patrons enter, co-workers chat, we are ready to start the new day at the library.
After an hour on the front desk, it is time for me to put away carts. I glare over at them.
Of course, the kiddie cart is the only one left and it is full
I take a sip of my cold coffee and trudge forward with the children’s cart. This cart is double the size of our other carts. Children’s items are well used at our branch of the library. The section is divided up into quite a few subsections, making the job tedious. The area is well used during the afternoon makes mornings the better time to tackle this cart. I feel somewhat fortunate that it is only 10 a.m. when I am ready to enter this section.
Today, the section is empty and I proceed to arrange the books. The books surrounding the one that I am shelving have to be rearranged. Children frequently grab a book and place it back a few books over from where it belongs. As I continue this routine, a grandmother and a child enter the area. The little girl in the pink flowered jumper with toddles a few steps ahead of the gray-haired woman. After a short deliberation, they pick out a book. The woman hoists the little one and her doll onto her lap. As the grandmother starts reading the book, I hear her sing-song voice reading The Five Little Monkeys and smile. The child sits contently listening. I feel honored to watch this interaction.
Today, as part of my blessings, I include listening to the story while I was working. I have to privilege of working in an environment where I can witness these quiet blessings.
