I used to be afraid to say what I really feel
and put it out there for the world to see.
But I shouldn’t be afraid to express myself,
love myself, and set myself free
from societal constructs that will question
such themes with scepticism and ignorance,
when there’s been a 70% rise in young people
with mental health issues, it makes very little sense.
We must not really be talking about it when
so many suffer in silence,
the outwards appearing absolutely fine
but with internal deafening sirens.
The constant lies of ‘I’m okay’
and the fake plastered smiles
that help avoid those difficult questions
when you don’t consider life worth while.
Open up, I urge you,
if you can talk about your problems.
Because the main problem is this elusive blanket
stopping us from talking about them;
The main problem is this stigmatizing society
who won’t do any research
on something naturally occurring, totally okay
and that doesn’t in any way reduce your worth.
