ATTITUDES

In the world of self-help, an obvious trend has emerged that encourages cutting ties with Negative People. We are told that in order to be positive, happy individuals we must unburden ourselves of the people that can bring us down. What this self-help advice invariably fails to do, though, is to define exactly what a negative person is.
As someone who has struggled with depression, I am well aware of what negativity is. I am also well aware that negativity and toxicity are two very different creatures. And what I’m understanding when I see these tidbits of advice is that both these things are being lumped together under one heading.
I am a firm believer in cutting ties with the toxic people who bring us to harm. But eliminating from our lives the people who are in pain, simply to rid ourselves of the burden of sadness, doesn’t strike me as the solution of a Positive Person. In fact, it seems like just the opposite.
