The outdoor ceiling fan is an excellent invention for outdoor dining. It can keep you and your guests cool in the summer heat while also providing some light to see by and even doubling as a bug zapper. The problem is that without regular maintenance, outdoor ceiling fans can get pretty dirty and smelly. Dirt collects on the blades of the fan or gets blown inside when it's not running, especially if it's mounted high up near an open window or door. So, when and how should you clean a ceiling fan?
Outdoor Ceiling Fan Cleaning
The outdoor ceiling fan should be cleaned at least once a season and preferably twice. The easiest way to clean it is to take it down and bring it inside. If you have an outdoor ceiling fan with a light fixture, first turn off the power to the light at the breaker box. Then unscrew the light globe and set it aside. You may need a ladder or step stool to reach the blades of the fan. If so, be very careful not to fall!
Once you have access to the blades, use a damp rag or sponge to wipe them clean of any dirt or dust. You can use a good quality ceiling fan cleaner. If there is any build-up on the blade, you can use a little bit of dish soap on the rag to help loosen it. Be sure to wipe off any excess soap and dry the blade completely before putting the light globe back on and screwing it in place.
Cleaning the Ceiling Fan Motor
If your outdoor ceiling fan has a motor, you can clean it with a vacuum cleaner. Remove the cover of the motor and, using the crevice tool, vacuum all of the dirt and dust that has collected inside. If there is any build-up on the motor, you can use a damp rag or sponge to wipe it clean. Be sure to dry it completely before putting the cover back on.
