If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then so might the route to getting and keeping that youthful appearance. From a naturopathic doctor to a fitness expert to a plastic surgeon, we consulted a range of experts and implored them to give us their very best anti-aging advice.
The all-natural skin care guru
“The three most important things you can do to keep your skin looking young and healthy are moisturize, moisturize and moisturize. Well-hydrated skin is healthy skin, and healthy skin is younger looking skin. Remember, the best defense is a good offense; skin that is hydrated and plump won’t develop the same fine lines and wrinkles as skin that is dry and dehydrated. And for truly effective, persistent hydration that penetrates to the deeper layers of your skin, choose a moisturizer without petrolatum, mineral oil or silicone ingredients.”
Bill Baker, founder all-natural skincare line, Consonant Skincare
The fitness expert
“There’s no substitute for good nutrition and exercise when it comes to fighting the aging process. Specifically, eat foods that don’t have a long list of ingredients, such as vegetables, fruit, meat and some nuts. Drink plenty of water and take an omega-3 fish oil and a multivitamin to help combat free radicals (the things that age your skin and body). Resistance training is a must to improve bone density, adding lean muscle tone that can increase your metabolism. Keep cardiovascular training sessions short and intense, rather than long and slow. Exercise keeps you looking and feeling young.”
Jordan Symonds, Owner/Head Coach, Reebok CrossFit
The beauty expert
“One of the best ways to look a little younger and fresher is to lighten up on your make up. Use a primer and a tinted moisturizer instead of a heavy foundation. A tinted moisturizer won’t accentuate fine lines and wrinkles the way a heavier foundation might, especially if you start off with a primer (same rule applies to powders). Lightly blend a translucent loose powder overtop to set. Then use a cream highlighter like Joe Fresh Highlighter in Ignite or Champagne on the upper cheeks and brow bones to give a soft and beautiful glow.
Simone Otis, Beauty consultant, Joe Fresh
The naturopathic doctor
“I have to say it is to maintain healthy blood sugar and insulin balance – and to do this we have to become aware of the amount of carbs we are eating and how well our body tolerates them. Excess insulin literally causes the slow destruction of bodily tissues and organs, including our bones, muscles, skin, blood vessels, brain, liver and more. And this far-reaching, devastating imbalance is spurred by one basic factor: the frequency, amount and type of carbohydrates (sugars) we consistently consume over time, and our body’s individual ability to process them.”
Natasha Turner, B.Sc., N.D. is a naturopathic doctor and author of the bestselling book The Hormone Diet.
The nutritionist
“I believe you are what you eat. Eating well and living a healthy lifestyle benefits your body and skin. Blueberries are the fruit to enjoy. They contain antioxidants, especially vitamin C that helps keep your complexion smooth. Salmon and tuna contain omega 3 fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory effects that can reduce the risk of arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome and eczema. One hundred percent whole grains, such as bread, cereals, pastas and rice are high in fibre and keep you full and satisfied for longer. This is an advantage for weight control and may prevent chronic and serious disease.”
Rose Reisman, nutrition and wellness expert, author, and executive director of Rose Reisman Catering and Personal Gourmet
The plastic surgeon
“In my experience, the absolute best tip is this: Get on a truly excellent skincare program that both “exercises” and protects the skin, and which is customized to your skin type. Our line, Miracle 10 Cosmetics, for example is based on the belief that the skin, like any other vital organ, needs to be challenged and exercised in order to look its best. Keeping your body physically fit allows you to feel and look young, right? Well it’s the same for the skin. An excellent skin care regime should protect the skin by shielding it from pollution and the elements, and challenge or exercise the skin to increase cell turnover, stimulate the production of collagen, and promote the synthesis of elastin. Don’t “do it yourself” at your local drugstore. Seek the advice of a professional who can customize a program that will address the unique needs of your skin.”
