If at all possible, use cold water to wash clothes. Coldwater is a good friend to your laundry because it is much milder on fabrics than super-hot water, which can cause shrinking and straining. As hot water can fade dark and brilliant colours, it is also quite gentle on them.
Coldwater also saves electricity, which is good for the environment and saves you money. But, of course, you won't always be able to use cold water to wash clothes—in some cases, such as with jeans and most white clothing, warm water is preferable.
