Let us consider size first. You need enough room for the whole family to travel comfortably even in long-range trips. The car must have enough room for everyone plus a reasonable amount of baggage in the trunk. If you have a family of four a small SUV would be about right, for six a large SUV would be great. Most people these days prefer buying an SUV than a regular car. An SUV can be used in different terrains, its wheelbase is higher and its general construction is stronger than that of a regular car. Even though both types of cars have airbags and other means of protection against impact, the SUV has a stronger frame so it can be used off-road. If you prefer a regular car make sure that it has lateral airbags and other means of protection before buying it.
Fuel consumption is another very important issue you must study. A huge engine is not necessarily the best. Large engines use more fuel than smaller ones even while standing at a light waiting for the green signal. Fuel prices are constantly changing and generally they go up and not down, a large engine in a car used every day will eventually make a dent in your monthly income. The cost of regular maintenance and eventual repairs varies too. Usually foreign cars are more expensive to maintain and repair than those made locally. Medium size engines do not have the horsepower that large engines that is true, but at the same time, you are not planning to race in NASCAR with your family car. So don't go off your rocker buying a muscle car when you can save money and fuel buying a normal, medium size car.
The purpose of the car is also important when deciding what you are going to buy. If you are a family that will own two cars you should have one which is large and comfortable, good for travelling long distances and another which has low fuel consumption, is smaller and more practical to drive. You only need one family car so make the other one a car easy to park, easy to maintain and repair and that will go forever with a bit of fuel. This is especially true and beneficial if you have to run errands every day or your job and the kids' school is far from home or you have to spend a long time on the highway or traffic jams.
Always make sure that the new car you want to buy complies with all state and federal pollution regulations while maintaining a good fuel consumption average. Make sure that it has all, and if possible, more safety features than those required by law. Ask the dealer for this information in writing and do your own research online too. Check the factory page online and find the car you want to buy, read everything they have to say about it. Look for pages that contain comments posted by other people who own the same car you want to buy, concentrate on the negative comments and not so much on the positive. Before taking the dive, look at other car makes that have similar cars and study them too. With all this information in hand go over all the pros and cons, make up your mind on which is the best for you and your family. When this is done, take a vote about the color you want, the number of speakers and screens you want and go out to buy your new family car.
